• If in some place the wallpaper is firmly stuck to the wall, it is unnecessary to tear the paper: you just need to pry this area with a spatula.

Grinder and needle roller

For more durable tapestries, we need specialized equipment:

• If the material is glued to a plastered wall, then the instruction recommends rolling it with a needle roller before removing it.
• Metal needles, penetrating into the thickness of the wallpaper, reduce the strength of adhesion to the base, and therefore dismantling will require much less effort.

Instead of a roller, you can use a specialized tool - the so-called "wallpaper tiger":

• This device is a design of three rotating rollers fixed on a special attachment.
• When processing wallpaper, we form a grid of shallow scratches on it, which makes it easier to remove the material from the base.

Note! The cutting element is sized so that it does not damage the plaster. So we will save time and effort on preparing the walls for decoration after removing the tapestries.

If this does not help, then "heavy artillery" should be used:

• We put on the grinder a special attachment in the form of a brush made of metal fibers (the so-called brushing).
• We brushed all surfaces, removing the finish from them.
• The main disadvantage of this method is its excessive intensity: when exposed to brushing, it removes not only the wallpaper, but also the putty with plaster.
• Naturally, then the concrete walls will need to be leveled anew, and therefore the cost of repairs, as well as the time for its implementation, will increase significantly.

However, the need to apply such harsh measures is rare. Most often, it is possible to get by with more gentle methods, which we will talk about in the next section.

Use of additional funds

Water and steam

So, we could not cope with one spatula or "tiger", therefore we will look for alternative methods of solving the problem.

The most effective yet affordable tool for removing old wallpaper is plain water:

• Pour water into a spray bottle (better pneumatic - it will be faster) and spray on the walls... The denser the material, the more liquid needs to be applied.

Advice! In the treated room, we turn off the electricity, since drops falling into the sockets or to the wires under the wallpaper can cause a short circuit.

• 5-7 minutes after wetting, we try to remove the tapestries... Usually, wet material falls off the wall with little or no effort, but in some cases you will need to help it a little with a spatula.
• We use warm water to make the process more efficient.... It dissolves the glue faster, so it takes less effort to remove.
• Steam can be used instead of hot water... We iron the most difficult places with an iron with a steaming function: as a rule, two or three passes are enough for the trellises to begin to deform and peel off the wall.

• In addition to the iron, you can also use a vertical steamer or a steam generator: this way the work will go faster, and household appliances will not be affected.

Naturally, washable wallpaper should not be treated this way. Remove the protective polymer layer from the liquid before spraying or steaming. As a last resort, applying small punctures or cuts through which the liquid will flow to the base helps.

Chemical reagents

If you want to remove the material glued according to all the rules, then you should use special chemical compositions.

Cleaning from surfaces should be done according to the following scheme:

• First, we pry the edges with a spatula and cut the seams between the rolls.
• Then we process the surface with a roller or cut it with the "wallpaper tiger". The more we damage the outer layer, the better.

Note! If varnish was applied to the wallpaper, then it must be removed with an abrasive, for example, by treating the walls with a sanding bar with coarse sandpaper.

• If possible, remove the vinyl from the paper or non-woven base. As a rule, the layers of material come off quite easily.

After this preparation, we begin chemical treatment:

• Add table vinegar (about 50 ml per 1 liter) to the water for moistening the trellises. Vinegar dissolves glue well, but it smells very unpleasant.
• Instead of vinegar, you can use whiteness (cap per liter) or dishwashing liquid (1-2 tablespoons per liter). To enhance the effect, dissolve the components in hot water and apply to the walls without waiting for cooling.
• However, the best result is shown by special wallpaper removers (Quelyd Dissoucol, Atlas Alpan and similar). Although they are characterized by a rather high price, the active components of these compositions do an excellent job with most adhesive mixtures, dissolving them and reducing adhesion to almost zero.

Note! The main advantage of such products is that they do not damage putty and plaster.

Whatever composition is used, we apply it over the entire surface of the wallpaper. Most of the substance should be concentrated in the middle part of the roll - it is there, as practice shows, that the glue "holds" most firmly.

We maintain the solvents on the surface of the trellises for about 10-15 minutes (for specialized formulations, the time may differ, so you should be guided by the manufacturer's recommendations). After that, the tapestries are removed almost effortlessly, and there is no need to scrape off the traces of glue with a spatula.

In order for the new finish to hold well, it is important to properly prepare the surface: remove the old wallpaper, putty the cracks, prime the walls. In this article, we will consider how to remove wallpaper from the walls without much material costs and nervous shocks.

If you have to clean a plastered wall plastered with cement mortar, and the wallpaper, although it has lost its appearance, has not lost its strength (it doesn’t torn at hand), consider yourself lucky, because you can do it in a few minutes. But if the coatings are thin, easily torn, and even glued them with PVA glue, it will seem to you that it is easier to sheathe the wall with drywall than to get rid of the hated wallpaper sheets. Of all the types, the hardest to remove is the old paper of the Soviet era. This is due to the peculiarities of the material, with the quality characteristics of the glue used in those days, at best - CMC, at worst - Bustilat, wood glue, PVA. Such coatings are almost impossible to tear off with a whole canvas. They have to be scraped off with effort, centimeter by centimeter. This is a rather tedious task.

Before pasting the walls, the old material must be completely removed.

Previously, the walls were prepared before pasting by gluing newspapers. If there was already a paper covering on the walls, then it was not removed, but simply a new one was applied on top of the old one. Over the years, many layers could have accumulated on the walls, firmly glued to each other. Leaving such an ugliness on the wall is not hygienic: mold and various insects often start. This is the reason for the unpleasant odor in the apartment.

The situation is especially dangerous when there are small children in the house, because the damage to the walls by fungi is the main cause of allergic diseases. There are several ways to free yourself from all these remnants of the past, described below.

Tools and materials

• a bucket of warm water, into which it is better to add dishwashing detergent;
• paint roller, foam sponge or sprayer.
• metal spatula or scraper;
• ladder;
• masking tape;
• polyethylene film;
• chemical removers for wallpaper;
• metal brush;
• iron and cotton flap.

It is more convenient to shoot from top to bottom. It is necessary to pry the upper edge with a spatula, then pull it down, prying up badly lagging places. This may be sufficient. But if the wallpaper does not come off well, additional moisture will be needed to soften the old glue.

1. Before starting work, it is necessary to observe basic technical safety rules, because there are electrical switches and sockets on the walls. And in the work, you may have to use water or other conductive liquids. 2. To the skirting board, using adhesive tape, you need to glue a plastic film with a width of at least 50 cm. The other end of the film is glued to the floor. This will make cleaning easier.
3. Soak old coatings with warm water and dish detergent or liquid soap. You do not need to immediately take up a large area, because while you scrape in one place, it will have time to dry in another. Such washing solutions are highly permeable and destroy the adhesive layer well, after which removal will not be difficult.

If you cannot delete the wallpaper in the usual way

If soaking does not work, try steaming with a wet cotton cloth and an iron. It is necessary to scrape off while the walls are hot.

If there is still residual glue that cannot be removed in any way, remove it with a coarse emery cloth, preferably with a grinder. Irregularities left on the walls will need to be putty.

Modern wallpapers are much easier to clean than old ones.

• Most of them are two-layer, which provides for the possibility of delamination. In this case, only the outer decorative layer, which has lost its appearance, can be removed, and the "substrate" will remain on the wall and will serve as the basis for new ones.
• Modern wallpaper glue has good adhesion properties and, at the same time, easily dissolves with special removers or warm water, which greatly simplifies the process.

The method of removal is determined by the type of wallpaper and the nature of the surface on which it was glued. Walls can be with a durable moisture-resistant surface or plasterboard. But the question inevitably arises: how to remove washable wallpaper coverings.

How to remove vinyl wallpaper

They have two layers. The first is the base, which is glued to the wall surface, it can be paper or non-woven. The second is vinyl (polyvinyl chloride), which gives moisture resistant and decorative properties. It is completely optional to remove them from the walls, they provide for the possibility of removing only the outer PVC layer. The base remains on the wall, provided it is securely glued. Depending on the base material, vinyl wallpapers are paper and non-woven. It is advisable to remove only the outer layer, since the remaining non-woven material, strengthening the wall, will serve as a good basis. If you have already decided to remove it completely, then the non-woven base is stronger than the paper one, therefore it is easier to remove it. It is enough to pry the edge with a spatula and smoothly tear it off the wall from top to bottom, helping with the spatula to tear off the hard-lagging places. How to "free" drywall from wallpaper

It is undesirable to moisten the surface abundantly - you can damage the drywall by removing it from the cardboard. If the drywall was not primed before pasting, then it will be almost impossible to remove the wallpaper coverings from it without damaging the cardboard layer. In order to do this, it is better to use special washes. To increase the effectiveness of the wash, the surface must be scratched or notched; you can make the perforation with a knife, spatula, toothed roller or a special wallpaper tiger.

In especially severe cases, when not wallpaper glue was used, but for example PVA, you can try to remove it together with a thin layer of cardboard. This is a decorative and finishing coating of walls and ceilings, consisting of cellulose or cotton flakes with dyes and other components. The composition contains a water-soluble glue, with which they stick to the surface. The glue dissolves with water even after drying. In order to remove liquid wallpaper, you must first soak well. The materials will crumble, crumble, holes and shells will remain, which means that additional time and money will have to be spent on leveling (putty, priming) the walls for a new topcoat. Washable

Before tearing off the wallpaper, which does not allow moisture to pass through, it is necessary to make cuts on their entire surface that penetrate the film, or pierce the holes with a needle roller.

After such treatment, the wall is moistened with water from a spray bottle or manually with a sponge. After 15 minutes, the dried glue will swell, the old wallpaper will begin to move away from the wall. Further, they will be removed according to the same principle as tore off their paper counterparts.

If the adhesive is not sufficiently dissolved, wetting should be repeated several times at 15-minute intervals.

Vinyl

Vinyl products are a structure of a polymer face layer (polyvinyl chloride) on a paper basis. Thanks to this combination, they are not only easy to glue, but they are also durable, they perfectly protect the wall materials from the internal moisture of some rooms of the house. In addition to this, the top polymer coating can have different (additionally provided by the manufacturer) characteristics: decorative with silk thread, textural, foamed, chemically resistant to solvents, therefore vinyl wallpaper canvases are not always easy to remove with plain water, like paper sheets.

To ensure access of water to the adhesive layer, so that you need to process the entire surface of the wall with a wallpaper tiger without gaps, as in this photo:

Using a spray bottle, a rag, a roller, moisten 1 sheet, every 5 minutes - 2, 3 sheets, and so on. With a spatula, pry the upper cut of the wallpaper strip, and smoothly pull it down. Remaining small pieces of base are re-wetted and transferred to strip 2. After removing the 3rd sheet, you need to return to the place where work began and remove the remaining scraps by hand with a spatula.

The next three stripes are traversed in a similar order. A simple sequence of how to remove old wallpaper, combining water absorption and peeling off the wallpaper, takes approximately 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

Steam puller

A specialized device consisting of a perforated steam-generating sole and a container with water. It can work both from electricity and from heating with bottled gas. Steam has an increased penetrating power compared to water, and, thanks to this property, the steam stripper significantly saves the time spent on quickly peeling off the old coating.

Removing washing wallpaper

This coating is the easiest to separate from the wall. Vinyl wallpapers and other washable coverings are high tenacity vinyl sheets glued onto a paper backing.

To remove them:

• Perforation is made on the walls with a knife or wallpaper tiger.

• The wall is well wetted with water.
• The surface is left until moisture penetrates under the plastic film and dissolves the adhesive.
• A horizontal cut is made at the top with a knife.
• Wallpaper can be easily removed from the wall.

Polyvinyl chloride is a fairly durable coating, so the canvases are separated in whole strips without breaking into separate elements. You can use a steam generator.

The glue will swell from the influence of steam and the walls can be quickly and without diluting the dirt removed from the wallpaper. Vinyl wallpaper can be removed with a special liquid with the addition of a small amount of PVA glue.

Removing wallpaper from a drywall wall

A feature of removing wallpaper from plasterboard walls is that this material does not tolerate moisture well, it is easy to injure. It is necessary to remove old canvases from drywall walls very carefully.

• Moistened with water, but not too hard.
• It is better to use a special vinyl stripper.

Remove wallpaper from drywall

When removing wallpaper from drywall, it is strictly forbidden to wet it with water! Excess liquid will damage the cardboard and the walls may start to crumble. If you nevertheless decide to take them off at any cost, or you went through the impregnation several times before gluing, do it at your own peril and risk.
