Easter Matins is the shortest and most solemn matins of the year. This matins begins immediately after the religious procession, and the beginning takes place on the porch, and only after the so-called “Easter beginning” do believers enter the temple.

So, on the porch at the end of the procession rector solemnly, representing the cross with a censer, he pronounces the initial exclamation of Matins:

The canon is the most solemn and, in its own way, specific gravity, the main part of Easter Matins. According to the Rules, the canon should be sung at 16: irmos 4 times, troparia at 12, but let us immediately say that in parish practice almost everywhere (except monasteries) irmos and all troparions are sung once. The chorus to all troparions is “Christ is risen from the dead.” Although, according to the Charter, all canons should be sung in singing (that is, not only irmos, but also all troparia should be sung), the Easter canon is the only one in which both irmos and troparia are sung in parish practice.

All songs in the canon have the same structure (the 9th canto differs only in the presence of special choruses). At each song of the canon, the priest, preceded by the deacon, censes the altar, iconostasis and believers from the pulpit; on the 8th song, the deacon performs censing. After each song there is a small litany with a special exclamation; all exclamations are indicated in the Typikon and fully printed in the Triodion.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the singing of the Irmos of the canon by the rector (clergy). The Typicon actually contains the following injunction: “It is always the primate who creates the beginning of the canon for every hymn.” Therefore, in some manuals the sequence of Easter Matins is outlined taking this feature into account. However, one must keep in mind that in church use there are several different chants of the Easter canon, and for some of them this course of action is difficult to accept. In particular, the Moscow chant of the Easter canon is fully consistent with the fact that the beginning of each irmos will be sung by a priest, and the choir will immediately pick up his words. However, in other chants, such a transition from the solo introduction of the priest to the singing of the choir will not go so smoothly. In addition, if the priest does not have musical ability, the discrepancies between his singing and the singing of the choir will be noticeable to everyone. In this regard, it should be considered completely acceptable for a choir to sing Irmos in its entirety in those cases where singing together with the priest creates more problems than will decorate the Easter service.

We pay special attention to the inadmissibility of Christening “before the time”,

that is, during the singing of troparions or catavasia (unfortunately, such a phenomenon is very

For when the priest shares Christ with the people and the people respond, the singing of the choir is “muffled” and thus, on the one hand, an obstacle is created for the singers, on the other hand, those praying in the temple cannot hear the words of the chant being performed. As a result, the impression arises that the priest is inattentive to the words of the canon and is only concerned with his own actions (censing and congratulating the people). And such behavior should not be justified as “excessive” Easter joy(as some do), because no joy or other “good motive” can serve as an excuse for outrage, disruption of the normal course of worship. In this regard, the priest, if he has at least some degree of reverence for church hymns, should, if he nevertheless completed censing before the choir sang the katavasiya, simply wait a little and then, when the choir falls silent, christen himself with by the people.

Although the Typikon does not exactly say about the manner of singing of this lamp, there is every reason to believe that the scheme should be the same as at the services of Holy Week, where a similar three-time singing of one festive lamp takes place, that is, as follows: “Having fallen asleep in the flesh...” “Glory”: “Having fallen asleep in the flesh...”, “And now”: “Having fallen asleep in the flesh...”. However, in practice, “Glory” and “And Now” are often omitted between the singing of the lamp.

“Every breath…” and psalms of praise (although the Rules require the singing of all verses of these psalms, in practice the choir sings only the first two verses and immediately proceeds to singing stichera).

While singing the stichera of praise, the priest, if he serves alone, dresses in red robes. If the service is performed by a council of clergy, then on the laudatory stichera only the priest who will perform the proskomedia is dressed, while others complete the Matins sequence in white robes and dress in red at the hours.

Easter service: what happens in the church on Easter

We come to Easter Matins, but before it they serve the Midnight Office, which dates back to the Lenten Triodion, and even earlier you can catch the reading of the Acts of the Holy Apostles. The fact is that the arrangement of the liturgical day of Holy Saturday is extremely capacious, it contains many different aspects and difficult issues. The liturgy of this day should be celebrated at Vespers, which begins in the afternoon, at 3-4 o'clock; The liturgy of St. Basil the Great ends in the evening, and the Charter prescribes not to leave the church, therefore, after the liturgy, bread and wine are blessed so that everyone who is in the church can refresh themselves.

The chapter of the Typikon, which is dedicated to Holy Saturday, contains a very alarming instruction that everyone should monitor their feelings; it says that this time on the border of the two Triodea, on the threshold of Easter, is very dangerous spiritually. The Charter assigns the reading of the Acts of the Holy Apostles between the Liturgy of Basil the Great and the Midnight Office and provides this instruction with the following remark:

“Let all the brethren listen diligently, and let not a single one of them go to sleep and betray himself, fearing the defilement of the tempting enemy; in such times and places the enemy strives to desecrate careless and sleepy monks.”

So, everyone sits, eats and listens to the Acts of the Holy Apostles, which must be read in full. The Rule, naturally, does not set an exact time (for example, exactly at midnight) for the Midnight Office and then Matins, because in fact no one knows exactly at what time the Lord rose from the dead.

So, midnight office. This is the Easter Midnight Office, the Sunday Midnight Office, and usually at the Sunday Midnight Office the Trinity Canon is read from the Octoechos. But on this day, at the Midnight Office, the canon of Great Saturday is sung or read “By the Wave of the Sea...” According to current practice, during the singing of Irmos 9 of the song Do not weep for Me, Mother, the clergy are supposed to already be in the middle of the temple, lift the Shroud and bring it into the altar, where she will remain on the throne until Easter is celebrated.

The Midnight Office has ended, and Easter Matins begins with a procession of the cross, which is performed with the singing of the Sunday stichera of the 6th tone of Thy Resurrection, O Christ the Savior. There is nothing specific in the Charter about procession it is not said, but the entire clergy is instructed to go out into the vestibule with icons of the Resurrection of Christ, with a cross, with a censer, in full vestments, and close the doors to the temple. The icons should be facing west, i.e. worshipers must see the icons, and Easter Matins begins in front of the western doors of the temple. It begins with the exclamation Glory to the Saints, and at the same time the question does not even seem to arise, where is the double psalm? It's actually quite interesting; After all, Easter Matins is extremely festive, is perceived by us as a “holiday holiday,” and at the same time does not have any ordinary, regular signs of a festive divine service: there is no doxology sung at it, there is no polyeleos - all that is usually an integral part of a festive matins. From Wednesday of Holy Week, the reading of ordinary kathismas has already been cancelled, and on Bright Week the Psalter almost completely disappears from the service, remaining only in very small parts: prokemeny, exalted and laudatory psalms. The double psalm is canceled not only on Bright Day, but also until the Feast of the Ascension itself.

After the exclamation of Glory to the Saints, a moment comes that everyone is really looking forward to: the troparion of Easter Christ is risen from the dead is sung three times by the clergy, and then the choir sings it three times (the Charter says “we”, because the face is only the mouth of the community, and, of course, the troparion everyone should sing). Then the clergy sing the Easter verses “May God rise again...” and others, including Glory, and now, to each of which the choir sings Christ is Risen once. It would seem that everything is completely clear, but more than once I had to witness how in joy the rites are forgotten and Christ is Risen are sung in the wrong way and not as many times as prescribed. On the one hand, you shouldn’t be upset on a holiday, but on the other hand, why not do everything right, as indicated in the Typikon? After singing the troparion of Easter, the doors open and everyone enters the church, and there is usually a crowd, some kind of rush, as if we are all late for something. In fact, the Charter does not provide for anything hasty or urgent at this moment: you need to enter the temple with repeated singing of Christ is Risen, and that’s all.

When everyone has entered the temple and taken their places: the ministers in the altar, the choir on the choir, and the church people in the space of the temple, the Easter Matins begins with the Great Litany. After the Great Litany, the Paschal Canon of St. Petersburg immediately follows. John of Damascus. It would seem that something was missed. And in fact, the Psalter is skipped: six psalms and kathismas with sedals.

During Holy and Easter Week, biblical songs are canceled, so at Easter Matins, strictly according to the Rule, we sing the canon with the refrain for each troparion, “Christ is risen from the dead.” In addition, our worship is a song service, and almost everything must be sung. And we can say that this is so, because even temple reading on one sound, recte tono, is also singing; in our worship there is no ordinary, simple speech, not colored by a musical element; in church they even chant and chant exclamations. There are different gradations of the singing element in the service: there is reading, there is an exclamation (for example, prokeimna), there is an exclamation from the priest, which also belongs to the musical element (in some manuscripts there is a musical marking for exclamations), and there is singing, be it singing “quickly” or melismatically developed singing, which the Charter speaks of “with sweet singing...” In our worship there is no word that is not colored by sound, but many parts of the service over time seem to be lowered in musical gradation, and the canon is one of them. The canons, of course, should always be sung, but we very rarely have the happiness of hearing the canon sung, which is why the singing of the canon on Easter is so significant.

So, the canon of St. John of Damascus with chorus. Everyone probably noticed that in each song of this canon there are very few troparions: irmos and two or three troparions. And the Rules say this: “Sing the irmos in four (antiphonally - 1st lyric and 2nd lyric), and the troparia in twelve (each troparion must be sung 6 times).” The typikon says that the first words of each irmos are necessarily sung by the primate in the altar, i.e. The most festive and inspired performance of this text is assigned. You see how many times the troparia of the Paschal Canon must be sung, and this constant repetition of the text teaches us something important and significant. Of course, the Easter Canon of John of Damascus belongs to the best canons of Orthodox worship. The Charter teaches us to rejoice, endlessly repeat these jubilant words that we all know very well, and calls us to deep and meaningful joy.

After each song of the canon there is a katavasia, a repetition of the irmos, then Christ is risen three times and a small litany, i.e. the execution of the canon is as solemn as possible. A small litany for each song (there are eight in total) is something completely unheard of in our worship. 3 hymns each - ipakoi of Easter, and 6 hymns - kontakion of Easter, ikos and the Resurrection of Christ three times. The canon ends with the famous exapostilary of Plotius falling asleep, which is sung three times. After it, the singing of stichera of praise immediately begins, although according to the Rule, every breath and psalms of praise are supposed to precede this. For some reason, we skip this and the stichera begin immediately.

What do these stichera on praise represent? If we turn to Vespers, at which the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated on Most Blessed Saturday, we will remember that on the Lord, having cried out, three stichera from the Sunday service of the 1st tone were sung there, because Saturday evening already begins the Sunday day. So, at Easter Matins the Sunday stichera of the 1st tone are also sung, but not “exclaiming” stichera, but praise stichera. Subsequently, for each day of Bright Week, Sunday hymns of the Octoechos in a certain voice will be assigned. On the first day of Easter - 1 tone, on Monday - 2, etc. This is a kind of “parade of voices,” but not eight, but only seven, because 7th voice is skipped. This begins on Holy Saturday at Vespers, continues at Easter Matins and then every day during Bright Week. To these Sunday stichera of the 1st tone are added the stichera of Easter, which everyone knows very well, with the chants “May God rise...”, etc.

The last stichera of Easter includes the text Christ is Risen. After the stichera ends, you need to sing Christ is Risen three more times. It's pretty difficult moment, and you should stop there. At the conclusion of these Easter stichera, Christ is risen is sounded either once or four times, but is never sung three times, because the text of the Easter troparion is the final line of the last stichera; then the troparion itself is performed three times, and thus Christ is risen... sounds four times in a row. This only happens on Bright Week. In the subsequent weeks of Pentecost, the threefold singing of the troparion is no longer added to these stichera.

After the stichera for praise and the stichera for Easter are sung, it is necessary to kiss - to make Christ, congratulating each other on the holiday of the Holy Resurrection of Christ. Here the Typikon indicates a very interesting form of congratulation, which, unfortunately, is familiar to us only from the rite of forgiveness on Forgiveness Sunday, when the rector, priests, deacons, and altar boys come out and stand in front of the pulpit in accordance with their rank, and all parishioners approach them one by one. In the same order, according to the Charter, the Easter kiss should be performed, everyone should share Christ with everyone else.

After the kiss, the famous catechetical Word of John Chrysostom is read, repeating the dazzlingly joyful words of St. Paul: “Where is your sting, O death? Where the hell is your victory? (1 Cor. 15:55) and the end of Easter matins follows, after which the first hour should take place.

The Easter hours are completely special kind hours, and in the strict sense of the word can hardly be called hours: it would be more accurate to call them “instead of an hour,” because the same sequence is assigned on Bright Week for all minor services. Both the Midnight Office, and Compline, and all the hours (the first, third, sixth and ninth) have the same appearance for Bright Week: this is a sequence of Easter hymns (namely hymns, not readings), which are placed in the Colored Triodion entitled “O the hour of Holy Pascha and all Bright Week.”

Christ is risen three times, the Resurrection of Christ three times are sung, and then the hypakoi, kontakion and some Easter troparia. This sequence must be sung three times: during the first, third and sixth hours. Thus, the Easter hours, firstly, are psalmless, like the whole of Bright Week, and secondly, they are no different from each other and coincide with the sequence of the Easter Midnight Office and Compline. In the strict sense, the hours should be called thripsalm hours, and the Easter observance is instead of an hour, to be completely precise.

After Easter hours, the Divine Liturgy begins. On the first day of Easter, the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is scheduled to be celebrated. It begins, naturally, with the cry Blessed is the Kingdom... and then follows the special beginning of all the services of Bright Week: the clergy Christ is risen three times, the face of Christ is risen three times, then the clergy sing verses and for each verse the face sings Christ is risen once. All services on Bright Week begin in this way. Then the great litany and festive antiphons. The first antiphon is sung, the Only Begotten Son, as always, joins the second antiphon, and the third antiphon is verses, to each of which the troparion of the holiday is chanted, in this case Christ is Risen. At the entrance, “Come, let us worship” is not sung, but the entrance verse is recited. Then the choir sings the troparion of Easter - Christ is risen, hypakoia and kontakion of Easter. Instead of the Trisagion, we hear Elitsa being baptized into Christ, because in ancient times, on this great day, baptism was performed in the Church large quantity catechumens. Then the prokeimenon is proclaimed, the Apostle, Hallelujah and the Gospel are read. The Gospel is read on this day not about the events associated with the Resurrection, but 1 Conception from John is read, but it is this reading that puts special emphasis on the worship of this day, deepening our joy, making it more serious. It speaks of the Eternal Word and its incarnation. This concept is supposed to be read in all languages ​​that the servants of the temple know, and in the Typikon there is still an not explicit, but vague indication of this. The minimum that has developed in our practice is Church Slavonic and Russian texts, and where they can, they read in other languages.

The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom according to his rank. Naturally, there is no funeral litany on this day. The Cherubic Hymn, the Eucharistic Canon and the Worthy of Easter are sung, which consists of the chant “The Angel Cries...” and Irmos 9 of the song of the canon “Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem...” All this is sung instead of It is Worthy to Eat before Easter is celebrated.

Then follows the usual litany and after the exclamation “Holy of Holies” and the response of the choir “One is Holy...” the sacramental verse of Easter is sung. The text of this verse is familiar to everyone and is a kind of answer to the question that existed until recently, whether it is possible to receive communion on Easter. The sacrament verse for Easter goes like this:

“Receive the Body of Christ,

It is customary for us to sing Christ is Risen on Easter and Bright Week during the communion of the laity, but in fact we should sing the Body of Christ, because this is exactly the case, this is the sacramental verse of the entire period before the celebration of Easter.

Vespers on the first day of Easter is a completely exceptional service, because we know from the Gospel that on the first day after the Resurrection in the evening, Christ appeared to the disciples, and Thomas was not there, which is why he had to be separately assured of the Resurrection of Christ. At this Vespers the Gospel is read, so the entrance is also made with the Gospel. This service is unusually solemn, it is performed in full vestments, and at it the great prokeimenon is proclaimed: “Who is the great God, even as our God...” We will not talk in detail about the follow-up of this Vespers, we will only say that in almost everything except the entrance and reading of the Gospel , it is an example of vespers on any day of Bright Week. Moreover, every day at Vespers there will be its own special great prokeimenon. The great prokeimenon has, in addition to the text of the prokeimenon itself, three more verses (and not one, like the usual one), therefore the ordinary prokeimenon is sounded three times during the service, and the great one - five times. The Great Prokeimenon is appointed only for special days of the year.
