On August 14, according to the new style (August 1, according to the old style), the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos. This holiday was established on the occasion of signs from the icons of the Savior, Holy Mother of God and the Honorable Cross during the battles of the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky (1157-1174) with the Volga Bulgarians.

Day of the All-Merciful Savior - history

In 1164, Andrei Bogolyubsky launched a campaign against the Volga Bulgarians, who were pushing out the oppressed inhabitants of the Rostov and Suzdal lands. Trusting in the help of the Queen of Heaven, the prince took Her with him miraculous icon, which was brought by him from Kyiv and subsequently received the name Vladimir. Two priests in vestments carried the holy icon before the army and Honest Cross Christov. Before the battle, the pious prince, having partaken of the Holy Mysteries, turned with a fervent prayer to the Mother of God: “Everyone who trusts in You, Lady, will not perish, and I, a sinner, have in You a wall and a covering.” Following the prince, the generals and soldiers fell to their knees in front of the icon and, venerating the image, went against the enemy.

The Bulgarians were defeated and put to flight. According to legend, on the same day the Greek Emperor Manuel won a victory over the Saracens. An indisputable proof of the miraculousness of both of these victories were the huge fiery rays emanating from the icons of the Savior, the Mother of God and the Holy Cross that were in the army. These rays covered the regiments of the noble rulers of Greece and Russia and were visible to all those who fought. In memory of these wonderful victories, with the mutual consent of Prince Andrei and Emperor Manuel and with the blessing of representatives of the highest church authorities, the holiday of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos was established.

In the Russian Church, simultaneously with the celebration of the All-Merciful Savior, the remembrance of the Baptism of Rus' that took place on August 1, 988 is combined, in memory of which it is established to perform a small consecration of water on this day. Therefore, people sometimes call this holiday “Wet Spas.”

Another popular name for the holiday is “Honey Savior”. This name is due to the fact that in Rus' on this day beekeepers trimmed hives with honey and carried honeycombs of a new collection to the church for consecration. After the consecration of honey, on this day they treated everyone to it and first of all distributed honey to the poor. In the old days they even said that “the first to save and the beggar will try the honey.”

However, we must remember that the blessing of honey on this day is just a pious tradition. Such traditions (such as the blessing of apples on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord) are quite natural for the consciousness Orthodox man. The earth and everything living on it produce fruits according to the providence of God, and the person taking part in the production of these fruits, as a sign of gratitude to God for his help in this matter, brought the first grown fruits to the temple.

Therefore, the tradition of consecrating honey on this day itself is in no way connected with the Feast of the All-Merciful Savior. And, of course, this pious tradition should not overshadow the holiday celebrated by the Orthodox Church on this day.

Celebration of the All-Merciful Savior and the Blessed Virgin Mary established in the 12th century, probably around 1168, and is associated with an event in Russian history. In 1164 Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky (July 4 of the Old Style, July 17 of the New Art), who lived in Vladimir on the Klyazma, set out on a campaign against the Volga Bulgarians who lived along the middle Volga and Kama. The noble Prince Andrei was distinguished by deep and sincere piety. He loved to pray in solitude at night and tried to do good to the poor and needy. According to the chroniclers, he “preferred the incorruptible to the corruptible, the heavenly to the temporary, and the kingdom withsaints to God Almighty - to this fleeting kingdom of earth.”

In all his military campaigns, Saint Prince Andrew relied not so much on the power of arms, but on the help of God. Going to war with the Bulgarians in 1164, Prince Andrei, according to his pious custom, took with him on the campaign the miraculous icon of the Mother of God and the image of the Life-giving Cross, which was carried in front of his squad by two priests. Before the battle, the faithful Prince Andrei fervently prayed with his entire army, asking for God's help and the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. The victory over the Bulgarians was complete, and immediately after the end of the battle the pious prince ordered a thanksgiving prayer to be served. During the prayer service, a miracle happened - rays began to emanate from the icon of the Mother of God bright light, illuminated the entire army.

In memory of the victory and the miracle that took place, it was decided by Metropolitan Constantine of Kyiv, at the request of Bishop Nestor of Rostov (+1168), to celebrate the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos annually on August 1st. When the notice of the establishment of the holiday was sent to Constantinople, it turned out that on the same day, August 1, 1164, the Byzantine emperor Manuel Komnenos (1143-1180) defeated the Saracens and, performing a thanksgiving service after the battle, saw the same sign - rays of light emanating from the icon of the Savior. Therefore, the holiday of August 1 began to be celebrated not only in the Russian, but also in the Constantinople Church.

In gratitude to the Lord and His Most Pure Mother for granting victory, Saint Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky built a temple in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Nerl River (1165).

The origins of the celebration in honor of the All-Merciful Savior are much deeper than the memory of a military victory. This is, first of all, a holiday of faith in the boundless mercy of God, in the fact that God, in His goodness, is unusually close to man and is ready to protect him from all troubles and misfortunes. This idea turned out to be very close to the believing hearts of the Russian people. Hence the belief that moral, spiritual strength surpasses brute physical strength. From the very beginning of Christianity in Rus', Russian people knew the power of fervent prayers, sincere repentance and deeds of piety. They tried to make the commandment of mercy the law of life. It is known that the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir (+1015, commemorated July 15 of the Old Style, July 28 of the New Style) did good to the poor and disadvantaged, easily forgave insults inflicted on him and was ready to pardon even hardened criminals. Saint Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, according to the chroniclers, especially resembled his great ancestor with this virtue.

The veneration of the All-Merciful Savior is also reflected in Russian iconography. A feature of the Russian national school of icon painting was the depiction of Christ the Savior not so much as an impartial Judge, strict and ascetically stern, but as a Good Shepherd, gracious, meek, humble, filled with boundless love and mercy for people. These are the most ancient images Savior Not Made by Hands Moscow Assumption Cathedral (XII century), “Savior Golden Hair” (Yaroslavl, XIII century), The miraculous image of the Resurrection Cathedral in the city of Tutaev, painted by the Venerable Dionysius Glushitsky (XV century). In these faces of the Savior, Divine greatness, wisdom and perfect knowledge are combined with an expression of quiet sorrow, compassion and pity for the sinner andto humanity helpless in its distance from God. The pinnacle of icon painting in the depiction of the All-Merciful Savior is the work of the Moscow school of the 15th century. The brush of the Rev. Andrei Rublev belongs to the image of Christ from the Deesis rite of the Nativity Cathedral of Zvenigorod (XV century) - the meek, loving Savior penetrates with His Divine gaze into the suffering human soul. With the same open, heartfelt expression, the face of Christ the Savior in the dome of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Ferapontov Monastery, painted by the famous Russian icon painter Dionysius (15th century), is addressed to the viewer.

The icon of the Savior on the eastern side of the Spassky (formerly Florovsky) Gate in the Moscow Kremlin was especially revered in Russia. On this icon they are depicted falling at the feet of the Savior Venerable Sergius of Radonezh and Varlaam of Khutyn, as well as angels soaring and holding the cross and image. On the western wall of the Spassky Gate was depicted Mother of God with the Infant God and the Face of the Savior Not Made by Hands above the head of the Mother of God, who is preceded by the Moscow Saints Peter and Alexy. These images are associated with the miraculous preservation of the city of Moscow during the invasion of Khan Makhmet-Girey in 1521. The image of the All-Merciful Savior was painted above the main gate in the Kremlin according to the ancient pious custom in Rus' of overshadowing the passing gates with holy icons. Similar icons of the All-Merciful Savior were located above the entrance Kremlin gates in Smolensk, Novgorod and other ancient Russian cities. The angels surrounding the Savior guard the entrance and exit through the city gates; it is to the angels that a special prayer is read at the foundation of the city. The pious Tsar Alexy Mikhailovich (1645-1676) commanded that no one should pass through the Spassky Gate wearing a headdress - this command turned into folk custom, consecrated by many years of tradition. The exact observance of this custom was first observed by archers, then by sentries, who, for violation, were forced to bow to the ground before the holy image. Around 1856, the sentries were removed, but at the request of Muscovites, supported by the petition of Metropolitan of Moscow Philaret (Drozdov), they were again placed in the same place, “so that the ancient ancestral custom would be preserved inviolably,” as an expression of reverence for the shrine of the main gate of the capital city. It is known that when Napoleon entered the Spassky Gate in 1812, the wind suddenly tore his hat off his head. Turning to his retinue, he shouted: “Gentlemen, hats off!”

The image of the All-Merciful Savior on the Spassky Gate of the Moscow Kremlin in ancient written monuments was called wonderful, miraculous and great. Not only the residents of Moscow, but also all of Russia had a special reverence for him, and the gate itself, which received its name from the icon of the Savior, began to be called Saints.

Save me, God! Happy holiday! I will definitely read these prayers today!

These are truly powerful prayers and they are read with faith and with all your heart. It will be very useful if you read them with the whole family. The name of the holiday comes from the name of the Savior. Honey Savior is Orthodox holiday, which falls on the first days of the Dormition Lent - a strict Orthodox fasting, which was installed in memory of the death of the Virgin Mary (Blessed Virgin Mary).

Honey Spas is one of the most popular holidays among the residents of our country, which came to us from Ancient Rus'. Since ancient times, the month of August has brought with it three beloved holidays - three Saviors at once. It’s not difficult to remember when the Honey Spas in 2017 – it will take place in the middle of the month on August 14th. From year to year this date remains unchanged.

It is not difficult to guess that this celebration is directly related to the poppy harvest, which ripens precisely during this period. The second name of this holiday comes from folk calendar, in which it was noted that in mid-August bees stop bringing honey into the hive.

Honey Savior Day is also rich in festive memorable events. On August 1/14, the Orthodox Church celebrates two holidays:

“The Origin of the Tree of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord” and “The Celebration of the All-Merciful Savior, Christ our God, and the Most Holy Theotokos Mary, His Mother.”

Weaken, forgive, forgive, O God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and in nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us everything, for it is Good and Lover of Humanity.

Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord Lover of Humanity. Do good to those who do good. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petitions for salvation and eternal life. Visit those who are out of power and grant healing. Manage the sea as well. For travelers, travel. Grant forgiveness of sins to those who serve and forgive us. Have mercy on those who have commanded us unworthy to pray for them according to Your great mercy. Remember, Lord, our father and brethren who have fallen before us, and give them rest, where the light of Thy face shines. Remember, Lord, our captive brethren and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, O Lord, us, humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints: for blessed art thou unto the ages centuries. Amen".

The Prayer to the Honest Cross (“May God rise again...”) is one of the most powerful prayers that protects from all evil, misfortune and danger:

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may all those who hate Him flee from His presence. As smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts in the face of fire, so let demons perish from the face of those who love God and signify themselves with the sign of the cross, and who say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, drive away the demons by force on you of our drunken Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled upon the power the devil, and who gave us His Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. O Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.
