Exam structure

The exam includes 5 parts and is aimed at testing all the candidate’s language skills:

  • Reading – reading (4 tasks, given 1 hour 15 minutes to complete)
  • Writing – letter (2 tasks, given 30 minutes to complete)
  • Use of English – use of the language (5 tasks, 1 hour to complete)
  • Listening - listening (4 tasks, 40 min.)
  • Speaking - speaking

Many candidates consider Speaking to be the most difficult part, although at the same time it is also the shortest: only 15 minutes. The candidates are paired up and must complete certain tasks. Two examiners evaluate candidates: one asks questions, the second assigns points.

When preparing for the exam, you need to improve all your language skills and pay attention to your weaknesses.

How is the test scored?

Each part of the test is scored separately and contributes 20% of points to the final result. Even if you do poorly on one part of the test, you have every chance of still getting a pass grade on the rest of the exam. If you score 60-74%, you get a grade C (pass), 75-79% - a grade B, more than 80% - a grade A.

Where can I take the CAE?

In 2008, the British Council in Russia ceased administration. However, many language schools have acquired the right to administer these tests, so you should not have any difficulties finding a test center for the Cambridge exams.

The starting level of language proficiency required to prepare for the exam is: not lower than B2 (upper intermediate).

To determine the level, you must undergo testing. Testing is carried out strictly by recording () and consists of a lexical and grammatical test (duration 50 minutes) and a conversation (duration 10 minutes). We report the results within 1-2 business days.

General information

The CAE exam preparation program consists of two levels. The duration of each level is 3 months, the number of training hours is 48. The frequency of classes is twice a week. The duration of one lesson is 2 academic hours, i.e. 1 hour 30 min. Class days: Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) is a Cambridge English language exam with international recognition. It was developed by ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Language) at the University of Cambridge. It appeared in 1991.

CAE Test and Assessment Structure

The exam consists of the following parts:

Where to rent and how much does it cost?

Until 2007, the exam could be taken at the British Council. However, now the British Council does not accept exams; this function has been transferred to language centers.

In Moscow, the CAE exam is accepted by Education First Moscow, Language Link, BKC-IH, Center for Language Studies. CAE in Moscow is also accepted by other educational organizations, but they work only with their own students.

In Moscow, the exam can be taken approximately once a month. The cost of the exam in the summer of 2013 was about 7,800 rubles.

Students who enter UK universities take the exam. The certificate is recognized by universities in other English-speaking countries: Canada and Australia. The test results will be useful during recruiting.

Exam structure and procedure for taking CAE

Many language schools in Moscow provide preparation for CAE. Testing takes place in accredited centers. Among them are International House BKC, EF English First, Alibra School, Education First Moscow, Language Link, British International School PFUR Test Center. Testing consists of 5 parts. Use Of English is added to the traditional Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The examinee is required to have knowledge of advanced vocabulary, terminology, the use of complex structures and savvy in grammar.

Reading and Grammar (90 minutes, 40% of total grade)

Reading contains 8 blocks of tasks. The maximum score for the section is 78, the number of questions is 56. The examinee is required to understand and in-depth analyze diverse texts, dialogues, and statements. In some tasks you need to correctly use vocabulary and grammatical structures, and understand the peculiarities of the language.

Writing (90 minutes, 20% of total grade)

The part includes two tasks. You need to write two texts, 220-260 words each. The first is always an essay on a specific topic. The second could be a note, letter or review. In addition to literacy, presentation style, the presence of complex structures, advanced vocabulary, clarity and brevity are very important.

Listening (40 minutes, 20% of the total grade)

This block has 4 sections of tasks, 30 in total. Two of them are based on listening to dialogues, another two are based on monologues. There are 4-10 questions for each part of the listening test. To successfully pass, you need to understand the meaning of conversations, listen to details, and quickly identify important facts.

Speaking (15 minutes, 20% of total grade)

The stage consists of 4 parts:

  1. Interview - 2 minutes.
  2. Collaborative task - 4 minutes.
  3. Task card - 4 minutes.
  4. Discussion - 5 minutes.

Speaking assesses not only the ability to conduct a conversation and express yourself grammatically correct. The examinee is expected to use various complicating constructions, use synonyms, and complex terminology.

Certificate and cost

The cost of passing the test is 10,300 rubles. The certificate is issued upon correct completion of 60% of the tasks. There are three ratings in total:

  • Grade A - 80% or more.
  • Grade B - 75-79%.
  • Grade C - 60-74%.
