Install a instantaneous water heater. Do-it-yourself water heater installation. Why flow-through

Water heaters used in everyday life are used to supply warm water to apartments in multi-storey buildings, as well as private households. They do not have the same power as industrial devices and are designed for a certain number of residents.

To equip your home with a water heating device, minimal experience in installing plumbing will be sufficient.

Design of water heaters and their types

First you should choose the type of heating device that is most suitable for your case. To do this, it is worth analyzing and determining what requirements the product must meet, as well as its parameters and functions.

Water heating devices may vary in type of power supply and functional design. The power source for water heating devices can be natural gas or electricity. According to the type of operation, the units are available for running water and with a storage tank.

Storage water heaters

Water in storage systems is heated in a container connected to the water supply. This type of heating device is especially popular. This can be argued by the affordable cost of the devices, as well as the lack of special conditions for the installation of electrical equipment.

Flow type devices

The functional design of instantaneous water heaters is that the water is heated by passing through a special sleeve equipped with an electric thermoelement. Products of this type are mounted directly on the mixer, which is connected to the water supply.

This system provides water heating within 30 degrees. A significant disadvantage of such devices is that electrical devices have high energy consumption. This is unprofitable from an economic point of view. In addition, not all houses have electrical wiring that allows the operation of such powerful water heaters.

According to the energy consumption class, flow heating systems are divided into two types - single-phase and two-phase. Another difference is what type of heating element is used in the device. This can be a heating coil or a thermoelectric heater. If tap water has a high salt content, the best choice would be to install a instantaneous water heater equipped with a spiral. In addition, devices with heating elements consume 20–30% more electricity. An internal heating system will be the best option for seasonal use, for example, in a country house.

One of the main advantages of flow-type devices is the convenience and ease of installation. This type of work can be performed by a completely untrained person. To do this, you do not need to have any skills in either plumbing or electrical engineering.

Most of these devices are designed to be placed on the wall in close proximity to the faucet in the kitchen area or in the combined bathroom in order to reduce heat loss. Flow-type heating devices have a low weight, and therefore they do not require major fasteners, as is the case when installing a boiler in a bathroom. To do this, you can use simple fasteners and hardware. Depending on the model, heating units may be located above the faucet or under the sink. One of the advantages of such devices is the possibility of hidden installation. For this you can use plastic wall panels.

You can find out how to install a instantaneous water heater in the bathroom by reading the instructions included with the product. It must be equipped with a connection diagram for the instantaneous water heating system.

Heaters operating on this principle have the following disadvantages:

  • high energy intensity– from 5 to 30 kilowatts;
  • For correct operation of the equipment it is required a certain level of pressure in the water supply system; this excludes the possibility of using instantaneous water heaters on the top floors of apartment buildings.

Flow-type devices are optimal for installation in small rooms with a small number of occupants. In this case, the apartment should be located on the lower floors.

What you will need to install the heater under running water

In order to carry out temporary installation of an instantaneous water heater, you should have the following set of tools and parts available:

  • directly the water heating device itself;
  • a shower hose with the head removed, which should be connected to the faucet;
  • a hammer drill or impact drill designed for punching holes in concrete;
  • fasteners – dowels with self-tapping screws;
  • Pobedit drill, the diameter corresponding to the size of the dowels;
  • three-core copper electrical wire capable of withstanding sufficient load;
  • adjustable wrenches - pipe and Swedish;
  • pliers;
  • winding - tow or fum tape.

If the product is permanently installed, you will need the following plumbing fittings:

  • tee for supplying water from the water supply system to the water heater;
  • a gate valve that shuts off the water supply to the device;
  • a hose with union nuts of the required size to connect water to the device.

Instead of hoses, you can use a kit for installing metal-plastic pipes.

Preliminary work when installing an instantaneous water heater

First of all, you need to decide on the choice of device model. The market offers a fairly wide selection of flow-type heating systems, the installation of which can be done without the help of professionals. You should know that the models of this plumbing equipment have quite strong design differences. The appearance of the devices may also vary. But all modifications have the same operating principle, and the product is installed according to a certain scheme.

Even a beginner can easily install a instantaneous water heater

A flow-type water heating unit consists of a heating element, which is a welded flask with a pair of pipes with a diameter of 12 inches and three electrical terminals. The phase, neutral and ground wires are connected to them. The system design also includes a product body and a switch. In addition, depending on the modification, the product can be equipped with a rheostatic switch for smooth temperature control, an automatic emergency fuse and LED backlight.

Installation of a flow-through water heating system

Installation and assembly of such a structure can be done in two different ways. In the first case, the hot water outlet from the device is connected directly to the mixer using a shower hose with the nozzle removed. With this installation, the hot and cold water supply will be adjusted using the mixer control lever. When the mode knob on the tap is switched to shower mode, hot water is supplied to the mixer. And in tap mode, cold liquid flows from the water supply.

Of course, it is advisable, if possible, to connect the plumbing equipment in a more serious way than using an unreliable rubber shower hose. To do this, it is necessary to carry out a major installation of the product to the pipeline. A shut-off valve should be installed on the water supply pipe to the heater.

Close the valve at the entrance of the water supply to the apartment. In the selected area, using tow or fum tape, install a coupling - an adapter, with the help of which water will be supplied to the device. Seal connections carefully.

The device should be powered with electricity while complying with the safety requirements for connecting electrical heating equipment. It should be remembered that the energy intensity of the heating elements may exceed the permissible load in the electrical network of your apartment. At best, this will lead to knocking out plugs or automatic fuses, but it is possible that the wiring will catch fire. Before purchasing an electric heater, consider this point carefully. The device is powered by electricity through an outlet, which must be grounded.

The shut-off valve is connected to the inlet pipe of the heating element, and water is supplied to it using a hose or metal-plastic pipes. After this, the device is ready for use.

The next step is to install the faucet or shower mixer included in the delivery of the product. Now you can perform a test run of the equipment. To do this, you need to open the tap and turn on the electrical equipment. After a short period of time, 10–15 seconds, heated water will flow out of the mixer drain hole. Depending on the energy class, it can even be hot. The water pressure and temperature are regulated using a mixer - if you open the tap a little, hot water will flow, and if you open it completely, cooler water will flow.

You should know that using flow-through heaters it is almost impossible to obtain high-temperature water. If you need very hot water, it makes sense to think about how to install a boiler in the bathroom.

In cases where tap water does not meet quality standards, it is advisable to install a filter in front of the water heater inlet pipe. This will extend the life of the product. Use branded pipes and plumbing fittings.

Connecting an instantaneous water heater to the electrical network

The equipment must be reliably grounded. In addition, the system must be equipped with an emergency switch. It should be remembered that the water in a flow-through device heats up within 20 degrees, so the temperature of the liquid may differ in the cold and warm seasons.

Before purchasing an electric water heater, you should accurately calculate the load to which the wiring will be subjected. The cable parameters must correspond to the declared power of the heating unit. Also, different types of heating elements require different types of wiring. In addition, the system should be equipped with an emergency automatic fuse.

We can say that modern instantaneous water heaters will become a reliable source of warm water in your home. Such products will help you easily and quickly solve the problem of hot water supply.

Marking the wall for drilling holes for mounting an instantaneous water heater

Uninterrupted hot water supply is very important for modern life.

Having installed the storage system, you will have to wait until the water heats up to the desired temperature

Instantaneous water heaters are powerful electrical appliances that provide hot water whenever you need it.

Temporary installation of an instantaneous water heater will not require much time

For country houses, a major installation of the device is appropriate

Considering the high power of the device, it is better to install an emergency automatic power shutdown system

Installation of instantaneous water heater

How to install a instantaneous water heater with your own hands?

Every year, the time period in which you will need to live without hot water is becoming smaller, but even 10 days of inconvenience is a long enough period to think about some alternative ways to obtain hot water.

Image 1. Diagram of an instantaneous water heater: 1 – heating element, 2 – switch, 3 – power supply terminals, 4 – rotary compressor, 5 – connection to the water supply, 6 – heated water outlet, 7 – holes required to connect the device to the wall.

When it comes to somehow surviving several weeks in relative comfort, installing a tankless water heater may be the ideal solution. Its main advantage is ease of installation. Absolutely anyone who has only general knowledge about plumbing and electrical wiring can handle this process.

Most often, such heating devices are hung on the wall, as close as possible to the faucet in the kitchen or bathroom, so that heat loss can be minimized. Flow-through heaters, compared to storage heaters, are quite light in weight, and therefore do not require particularly strong mounting. Ordinary brackets and mounting screws may also be suitable. Flow-through heating devices are located both above and below the sink or sink. For both cases, the connection diagram must be indicated in the instructions that come with the device itself.

Preparing an instantaneous electric water heater

First of all, you will need to select the required instantaneous water heater. There are quite a large number of devices of this type that you can install yourself. They are quite different in design and shape. However, they are all arranged approximately the same inside, and their installation always occurs in the same way.

The design of the instantaneous water heater is shown below IMAGE 1, where 1 – heating element, 2 – switch, 3 – power supply terminals, 4 – rotary compressor, 5 – connection to the water supply, 6 – heated water outlet, 7 – holes required to connect the device to wall

Any instantaneous water heater will consist of a heating element directly (which is sealed on all sides of the cylinder and from which 2 pieces of tubes with 1/2-inch threads lead, 3 terminals for connecting the carrier, neutral and ground wires), a switch or switch and a housing.

The heater that needs to be installed, depending on the model, can be equipped with a stepped and smooth rheostatic heating regulator, a safety sensor against shutdown or overheating of water, and a light indicator for turning on.

You should mark on the wall the places where you plan to attach the instantaneous water heater. They will be needed for drilling holes. Next, you need to make the appropriate number of holes, and then drive the dowels into them. Then you can begin installing the instantaneous water heater.

Do-it-yourself instantaneous water heater installation

Installation and connection of such a device can occur in 2 ways:

  1. Use the shower hose to turn it off as soon as the hot water comes on. In this case, switching between the water heater and the mixer tap will be done using the mixer handle. When the handle is in the shower position, water can flow from the water heater, and in the other position, as usual, from the tap.
  2. Permanently into the apartment water supply system. In such a case, it is necessary to install a separate valve at the inlet of the water heater. It makes sense to consider this method in more detail.

It is necessary to turn off the cold water, and then install the outlet adapter using fumilent in the intended location.

The electric drive is installed in accordance with the instructions for connecting the heating electrical wiring. The other end connects the wire, for example, to a socket for a washing machine. The heating power consumption should in no case exceed the wiring capabilities of the existing apartment. Otherwise, in the process of turning on the water heater at full power, there will be a chance that plugs or circuit breakers will break.

The valve is connected to the inlet pipe of the device, and a flexible hose or cermet pipe is connected to the valve. Everything will depend on which system is planned to be installed. The pipes or hose must be connected to a specially prepared adapter. At this stage the system will be ready for operation.

Next, the faucet or shower mixer from the water heater is installed. After this, you can proceed to testing the installed device. The water pressure and power supply to the heater should be turned on. After approximately 10-15 seconds, warm or, if a sufficiently powerful device was installed, hot water may flow from the tap. Its pressure and heat can be regulated by using a valve: with increased water pressure, it can be cooler. It should be said that it is absolutely impossible to get hot water (boiling water) in a 3.5 kW appliance. The temperature at different water pressures will range from slightly warm to almost hot. It is advisable to purchase a device that has less power only if the apartment has old wiring that cannot withstand even 3.5 kW.

If the instantaneous water heater is located away from the sink, the mixer must be connected using a flexible hose and secured to an additional bracket in a place near the sink where the additional faucet cannot cause inconvenience.

Previously, we conducted a review in which it was thoroughly covered, as well as recommendations for selection.

So, the new “tankless water heater” is out of the packaging, the instructions have been read, and now it’s time to think about where it’s best to install the instantaneous water heater.

It is advisable to choose a location for installing an instantaneous water heater based on the following considerations:

  • whether splashes from the shower will fall on the device in this place;
  • how convenient it will be to turn the device on and off;
  • how convenient it will be to use the shower (or tap) of the device.

Before you begin installation, you need to decide:

  • will it be convenient to use the device directly in the place where you take a shower (or, say, wash dishes);
  • Will it be convenient to use different operating modes (if such adjustments are available);
  • will moisture or water not get on the device (after all, there is clean 220V!).
  • It is also necessary to take into account the future water supply - how convenient it will be to connect the instantaneous water heater to the water supply. There will be no special conditions imposed on the wall - the weight of the device is small. Naturally, it will be somewhat more difficult to install the device on curved and very uneven walls.

Do-it-yourself instantaneous water heater installation

Installation begins with determining the location. We take a level, a pencil and mark the location of future installation. We remove the top cover from the water heater and apply it to the wall, level it horizontally and mark future holes. Using a drill, we drill holes for dowels (or plugs - as you like). We install dowels and fasten the device to the wall with screws.

Usually, the kit includes the necessary fasteners, but it often happens that the dowels themselves are short (for example, there is a thick layer of plaster on the wall) and the screws themselves are short, so I would recommend purchasing the necessary fasteners of the required size in advance. At this point the installation can be considered complete.

Connecting an instantaneous water heater to the water supply

An electric instantaneous water heater can be connected to water in several ways.

Method one is simple

We take the shower hose, unscrew the “watering can” and connect the hose to the cold water inlet of the water heater. Now, by setting the mixer handle to the “shower” position, we can use the water heater. If we put the handle in the “faucet” position, then cold water comes out of the tap, bypassing the heater. As soon as the centralized supply of hot water is restored, we disconnect the water heater from the “shower”, screw the shower head back on and continue to enjoy the benefits of civilization.

The second method is more complex, but more correct.

Connecting the water heater to the apartment's water supply through the outlet for the washing machine. To do this, we use a tee and a skein of fulenta or thread. After the tee, to disconnect the water heater from the water and to regulate the pressure and temperature of the water from the water heater, a tap is needed.

When installing a faucet, you should also pay attention to the ease of use of the latter. After all, we will open and close it repeatedly in the future.

The section of our water supply from the tap to the water heater can be installed using a variety of pipes: from metal-plastic and PVC to conventional flexible pipes. The fastest way, of course, is to make the liner using flexible hoses. If necessary, our water supply can be secured to the wall (or other surfaces) using staples or some other means of fastening.

Connecting an instantaneous water heater to the electrical network

As a rule, household single-phase instantaneous water heaters are very powerful devices - from 3 to 9 kW. Accordingly, for proper connection you will need a dedicated line (necessarily with a separate RCD for emergency shutdown), since a regular one will not withstand such voltage.

It is prohibited to use standard sockets for power supply, due to the fact that in most cases they do not have proper grounding.

When connecting wires to screw terminals, the phasing must be observed:

L, A or P1 - phase;

N, B or P2 - zero.

Attention! You cannot turn on a instantaneous water heater if it is not filled with water.

It is not recommended to carry out electrical installation work yourself; it is better to use the services of a specialist.

If there are frequent cases of hot water being cut off in your apartment or private house, then you can get out of the situation by installing and connecting an electric instantaneous water heater with your own hands. This device is a miniature version of the boiler and has an absolutely identical operating principle - cold water passes through the heating element, is heated and supplied to the desired tap. Next, we will look at the step-by-step technology for connecting an instantaneous water heater to the electrical network and water supply.

Step 1 – Getting ready for installation

The first step is to check your own electrical wiring and determine whether it can withstand the loads from this device. Today there are products on the market with a power from 2 to several tens of kilowatts. If in the first case the device can be plugged into an outlet without any problems, then to connect a high-power water heater it may be necessary to completely. Replacement is also required if the wiring is not grounded or is too old, which is often found in the country. If you have recently made repairs and completely changed the power supply line, it will be enough to bring out a separate cable for connection from the distribution box, which we will talk about a little below.

In addition, you will need to prepare tools for installing the housing on the wall: an electric drill, a hammer, a screwdriver and a set of open-end wrenches.

From the materials for connecting an electric instantaneous water heater to the network and water supply, be sure to prepare a FUM tape suitable in amperage, a copper three-core wire of a suitable cross-section or a grounded socket, a tee for metal-plastic pipes of a suitable diameter and a hose in a metal braid (may not be needed).

As for the wire diameter, we recommend that you do it yourself to select the most suitable value for the current load.

You can immediately watch a visual video instruction on how to connect an instantaneous water heater to a 220 Volt network:

We connect a single-phase water heater on our own

Step 2 – Attach the case to the wall

Everything is simple here - we select a suitable location for installing the electric instantaneous water heater and drill holes for its fastening. Usually the kit includes either brackets or special hinges. The only, but very important condition is that the device must be fixed perfectly evenly in all planes. Even a slight misalignment can cause the heating element to fail (the heating element will not be completely covered with water and will burn out over time).

Most often, instantaneous water heaters powered by electricity are installed in the kitchen (for washing dishes) or in the bathroom (for bathing). In the first case, due to the small dimensions of the device, it can be installed under the sink, and in the second case, under the sink, which will also save space. In any case, you cannot do without drilling, so prepare the right drill - for concrete for tiles or for wood for mounting on a wooden wall.

Step 3 – Connect to the power grid

Connecting an electric instantaneous water heater to the network with your own hands is not difficult. You need to remove the protective shield yourself and insert all three wires into the terminal block, as shown in the photo. Be sure to follow and connect all wires to the correct connectors according to the designation.

It is prohibited to carry out installation if there is no grounding in the room, because You are dealing with a dangerous connection: water + electricity. The slightest one may be your last if there is no provision for connecting a grounding wire. In addition, it is necessary to additionally protect the unit by connecting it through an RCD, which is activated when a leakage current is detected. You must connect the RCD at the distribution board so that it controls the entire line going to your instantaneous water heater.

Step 4 – Connecting to the water supply system

Everything here is no less simple - there are two holes at the exit from the housing. The first is necessary to connect cold water, the second is necessary to output hot water. Connecting the hoses is not difficult; it is much more important to correctly determine the “feeding” point.

If you decide to install an electric instantaneous water heater in the bathroom for a while, it is better to connect it to the shower hose (in the shower stall), simply by attaching the pipe to the mixer, as shown in the photo.

If you want to use the device for constant water heating, connect directly to the water supply pipes, through a tee with a shut-off valve and a metal braided hose. In this case, it will be possible to turn off the water during repairs to make replacing spare parts convenient.

Expert advice

We draw your attention to the fact that it is necessary to connect the shower head, which is included in the kit, to the hot water outlet from the heating element. The fact is that this nozzle has special thin nozzles that do not make it difficult to heat the water. If you choose your own nozzle with large nozzles, the water consumption may increase and the water heater will not have time to do its job.

What to consider during operation

Well, the last thing I would like to say is to use the device correctly. Many who installed this type of water heater complained after a while about its failure, citing the poor quality of the product. In fact, the problem is not the quality of the purchase, but the inattention of the person who uses it. The problem is that even the instructions highlight a recommendation for using the heater - when turning it off, you first need to turn off the device itself, and then the water. And vice versa - when you turn it on, first open the cold water, and then connect the equipment to the network. With such operation, the likelihood that the heating element will burn out is minimized.

That's all the technology for installing and connecting an electric instantaneous water heater with your own hands. As you can see, there is nothing complicated and even an electric kettle can handle this installation!

Modern flow-type water heating devices are very convenient to use and easy to repair.

Proper independent connection of a instantaneous water heater to the electrical network is the key to trouble-free operation of the boiler throughout the entire period of operation.

How to connect a instantaneous water heater to the electrical network? Despite certain similarities, the electrical circuit for connecting different types of water heating equipment may have significant differences, which directly depend on the main design features of such a device.

Flow-type water heaters are characterized by instant heating, while storage boilers are characterized by heating a certain volume of water over a certain period of time. It should be noted that the second version of the equipment has less power.

Electrical diagram for connecting a water heater

Installation of such equipment is carried out in strict accordance with the device labeling and only in rooms with high-quality waterproofing.

Water heaters are most often fixed with special brackets, after which the device is connected to the water supply system with plastic pipes.

Installation of a storage water heater

Depending on the installation method, storage type water heating equipment can be represented by the following models:

  1. wall;
  2. built-in;
  3. floor

Wall-mounted devices are mounted at a certain distance from water taps, in accordance with the diagram suggested in the instructions supplied with the boiler.

Connecting taps to the boiler

Floor-standing models are installed using a special stand, to which the device is fixed using a special bolt connection:

  • drilling holes in the supporting structure for anchor fasteners in accordance with preliminary markings made using a paper template;
  • fixing anchor bolts through the eyes in the mount of the water heater;
  • final tightening of anchor fasteners;
  • insertion of water heating equipment into the water supply system;
  • connecting a wall-mounted water heater to the electrical network.

At the final stage, a standard test check of the functionality of the installed storage water heater is mandatory.

The vertical arrangement of a heater with a volume of no more than 100 liters requires the use of two bracket supports, and oversized models and horizontal-type structures are hung using four supports.

Installation of instantaneous water heater

Water is heated in a flow-through water heating device immediately, and the flow rate is not limited.

Among other things, this type of water heater is usually characterized by very compact, small dimensions.

And this greatly facilitates its phased placement almost anywhere:

  • drilling several holes in the wall;
  • fixing the device on brackets;
  • connection to the water supply in accordance with the diagram in the accompanying instructions;
  • flexible or rigid wiring of the device to the water supply system;
  • mandatory sealing of connections;
  • testing the connection made.

Installation of instantaneous boiler

A detailed description diagram, with all the necessary marks for holes and connections, as well as fastenings, is usually included in the package of the instantaneous water heating device being sold.

Blackout

When carrying out installation work, the electrical power on the main panel must be turned off. De-energization of the room allocated for the installation of storage or instantaneous water heating equipment is carried out after grounding has been carried out, an outlet has been installed and grooves have been made for the wiring.

Power connection

After de-energizing, you can begin connecting the cable to the installed outlet in accordance with the color marking of the electrical conductors.

If you intend to connect the water heating unit directly, and not through an electrical outlet, then you will need to use non-flammable cables marked VVGng or NYM.

Grounding

Water heaters of any type are in constant contact with water, which is a good conductor of electric current. Any, even minor, violation of insulation can provoke a very painful or fatal electric shock. Among other things, metal parts of water heating equipment contribute to the occurrence of stray currents, which can cause corrosive and destructive changes.

In private households, grounding is also mandatory and helps prevent lightning strikes during a thunderstorm. It is optimal to carry out grounding through a wire that connects the housing and a metal part buried in the ground. For this purpose, a regular water riser or heating system can also be used.

  • installing an outlet with grounding wiring at a distance of 0.8 m from the floor level and about half a meter from the installation site of the water heating device;
  • replacing the old two-core wiring with three-core copper cables laid from the grounded panel to the outlet;
  • laying the cable in a special plastic box or pre-arranged grooves.

The most modern and high-quality electrical appliances are characterized by the presence of special grounding contacts on the body, the location of which can be determined by inspecting the water heating equipment.

When connecting a water heater, it is very important to remember the need to install a special socket equipped with three terminals.

Protective cover

The standard distance from the special protective cover of the water heater to the closest surface must be at least 30 cm if the water heater’s capacity is designed for 10-80 liters of water.

If the water heating device being installed has a tank that is too large in volume, then the distance from the special cover to the device itself cannot be less than half a meter.

Filling the tank and turning on the electricity

The first start-up work after installing a storage type water heater is carried out by checking the operability of all systems in accordance with the following sequence:

  • connections to the electrical network or gas pipeline;
  • connection to a pipeline water supply system;
  • filling the reservoir of water heating equipment with cold water;
  • filling the container by opening the hot water tap;
  • assessment of absence of leaks;
  • starting the heating system in medium mode.

Flow-type devices are tested by opening a hot water tap, but only after carefully checking the correct connection.

Regardless of the type and model of water heating equipment, you must remember that if there is too hard water in the water supply system, it is imperative to install a special filter to prevent the heating elements from failing too quickly.
