Funeral canon. On the commemoration of the dead according to the charter of the Orthodox Church. Canon of the One Deceased

From the very beginning of time, we do not know for certain what exactly happens to a person in the afterlife. According to the clergy, for the first three days the soul remains close to the body, since it is connected in some way with it, and after that it ascends into the sky in order to be responsible for its deeds. When the fortieth day arrives, a decision is made to the soul in which it will be assigned to heaven or hell. That is why, during the forty-day journey, the soul of the deceased needs our prayers and reading the canons.

Many church books contain a canon about the deceased, and more specifically, two canons. The first is “The Canon for the One Who Died,” and the second is the “Common Canon for the Dead.” They are the ones mentioned in the memorial service and contained in the liturgical books. The particular importance of these texts in religious ancient publications is that they contain detailed description and instructions on how to read them at home for a common person.

According to the established procedure, home reading of these canons about the deceased should begin after the words of the initial exclamation:

prayers of the saints our father, the usual beginning begins, after the ninetieth psalm and troparion "The depth of wisdom", the fiftieth psalm and the canon itself

The very sequence of the canon about the deceased does not contain a clear indication of the singing of the irmos (the first stanza in each of the nine songs), since we have established the practice of reading canons with irmos in the cell or house rule, both on the rule for communion and the three canons. And as a rule, antiphonal (choral) singing is not expected at home readings, so it is quite likely that there may be an odd number of chants for each text.

Sedalen (a chant during which you can sit) begins with the third song. When reading the canon for many of the deceased, you can simply sit during the liturgical hymn, “Truly all is vanity...” In the canon for the one who died, the sedalene is necessary before the fiftieth psalm:

Peace, our Savior..." in matins and requiem, including the sixth song of the kontakion and ikos and the ninth song "It's worthy to eat

After reading the Trisagion and Troparion:

With the spirits of the righteous..." instead of the litany, it is read forty times “Lord, have mercy...”, “Glory even now,” “Most honorable... Bless in the name of the Lord, father
This is followed by an exclamation:
Through the prayers of the saints our father
with a special funeral prayer text:
Remember Lord God
and before the final blessing:
Most honest... Glory, and now, Lord have mercy(three times) Bless" And “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy and rest the soul of Your servant(or Your servant) to endless ages, for He is good and a lover of mankind, and then it is proclaimed three times: to the servant of God who has passed away(name of rivers) everlasting memory

When reading the general canon for the dead, the proclamation before the final one occurs in the following format:

The reposed servant of God, our father and brothers and all Orthodox Christians, of whom we make remembrance, eternal memory» . In conclusion, 15 bows with the following prayer read three times: « Remember, Lord, the souls of Your departed servants(bow), Much in your life, as men have sinned, You, as a Lover of Mankind, forgive them and have mercy(bow), deliver eternal torment(bow), and establish the kingdom as partakers(bow), and do good for our souls(bow)

Take it for yourself and tell your friends!

We touched upon all the various cases when the Holy Church allows or itself calls, sometimes strenuously calls for prayer for the departed. But all the previously listed cases of commemoration of the dead are performed with the priest. And where a priest acts, a representative of this entire small Church, a person vested with special hierarchical powers with the blessing of the bishop, there every prayer becomes public, church, even if it is performed outside the church, at least in the presence of one pilgrim, or even without any pilgrims at all . Therefore, all funeral research is precisely defined in its composition, and the time when they can or cannot be performed is precisely assigned. And no one has the right to transgress these limits established by the Holy Church.

The home prayer of everyone individually is a different matter, although more or less specific Rules are given for it, but in it everyone is given some scope and some freedom for the manifestation of personal disposition, personal zeal. The Church specifies only a certain minimum for home prayer, placing evening and morning prayers in the Psalter. Both are presented in such a way that almost all are the prayers of one person praying for himself. Therefore, in addition to evening and morning prayers

MEMORIAL

The Psalter also gives a commemoration, his own must a monk or layman at the end of his cell rule with all tenderness and zeal of honor. Here, with many bows (to the ground or waist - according to the day), a general, very detailed and by name (the name of the rivers) commemoration of the living and the dead is performed. So, according to the rules of the Holy Church, the home prayer of each individual cannot be only a prayer for himself. And during home prayer, Orthodox Christians must fulfill their duty of prayer for all their brothers, living and dead. Here this can be done much more freely than during church services. Home prayer has the enormous advantage that here you can, at any moment, when a need arises and an opportunity and a free minute presents itself, to go to prayer, pray for yourself, and remember your loved ones. The prayer here can be both long and short, depending on zeal and circumstances - this is not like a church service, which, once begun, must not only be completed, but also performed exactly according to the Rules. It is true that church prayer is higher than home prayer, but it is higher mainly because those who pray there have to limit themselves, restrict their freedom, bring their mood into a certain framework, subordinate their desires to the general rank and order, do prayer not only as everyone wants, and for holy obedience, with love and humility to fulfill the Church Charter. When this is not the case, then self-indulgence remains in the church, requiring violation of the statutes to please itself - then the value of church prayer is small. On the other hand, there is no doubt that any Orthodox prayer in general, no matter where and under what circumstances it is offered, as offered by a faithful and obedient child of the Orthodox Church, is essentially a church prayer and as having received its power only from once performed on Calvary and constantly repeated in the Holy Eucharist, is at the same time the Eucharistic prayer.

Unfortunately, we have very little initiative in home prayer, especially among the laity. We hardly know how to pray on our own; we hardly even know the house rules. Some need has arisen, some special circumstance has arisen - you need to order a prayer service or a memorial service for the priest, you need to hire a reader or order a psalter to be read at the monastery. This is a good thing, and it is completely natural for church people to want to pray with the shepherds. But... We won’t blame everything on the priest. What happens with the priest happens in its own way, but you also need to work hard yourself, you also need to pray on your own, especially when it is not possible to pray with the priest.

In what form can the commemoration of the dead be performed at home prayer beyond what is contained in the commemoration book intended for daily reading?

CANON FOR THE DEAD

In ancient church books there are two canons for the dead, intended for home use: the canon for the one who died and the general canon for the dead. These are the same canons that were mentioned when talking about the memorial service. They are also published in our liturgical books. The ancient editions of these canons are important because they give detailed instructions on how to read them at home for a layman.

The order of home reading of these canons is as follows: after the initial exclamation: through the prayers of the saints our fathers follows the usual beginning, Psalm 90, troparion The depth of wisdom with his Theotokos, Psalm 50 and the canon itself: In the following there is no indication regarding the singing of the irmos: we have established the practice of reading the canons with the irmos as a cell, home rule. So on the three canons, so on the rule for Communion. In cell, home rule, antiphonal singing is not supposed, therefore it may be odd number chants on every song. Likewise, the canons about the dead can be sung at home with the Irmos. According to the 3rd canon of the canon, sedalen, and when reading the canon for the departed many, the usual sedalen, Truly all is vanity, with his Mother of God. And during the canon for the one who died, the sedal was placed at the requiem service and funeral matins before the 50th psalm: Peace, our Savior... with his Mother of God. According to the 6th song kontakion and ikos, according to the 9th song Worthy to eat.

Trisagion and troparion: With the spirits of the righteous... After them, instead of the litany Lord have mercy 40 times, Glory even now, Most honest... Bless the name of the Lord, father. Exclamation: Through the prayers of our saints, our fathers, and a special funeral prayer: Remember Lord God. The prayer precedes the dismissal: Most honest... Glory, and now, Lord have mercy(three times) Bless and release: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy and rest the soul of Your servant(or Your servant) forever and ever, for he is good and a lover of mankind and then he exclaims three times: the servant of God who passed away(name of rivers) everlasting memory. And with the canon for the many who have died, the final proclamation is in this form: The reposed servant of God, our father and brothers and all Orthodox Christians, of whom we make remembrance, eternal memory. In conclusion, 15 bows with the following prayer read three times: Remember, Lord, the souls of Your departed servants(bow), Much in your life, as men have sinned, You, as a Lover of Mankind, forgive them and have mercy(bow), deliver eternal torment(bow), and establish kingdoms for the partakers(bow), and do good for our souls(bow).

READING THE PSALMTER FOR THE DEAD

The custom of reading the Psalter for the dead dates back to ancient times. In our country, the psalter is read at the tomb of deceased laymen. In some places there are special readers who are either invited to the house of the deceased for continuous reading of the psalter, for example, for 40 days, or even a whole year, or in their own home they read the psalter at the request of the relatives of the deceased. In many Orthodox monasteries, the so-called “vigilant” day-night reading about the living and the dead is performed. With this reading of the psalter, in addition to the usual troparions and prayers for each kathisma, a special one is added to each glory, after which the names of the deceased are remembered.

The reading of the divinely inspired psalms of David should generally be a private activity for Orthodox Christians. No other book glorifies God like the Psalter... it... and prays to God for the whole world. The Church Charter prescribes reading during the service, in addition to the numerous psalms that are part of the main parts of the service, the entire psalter in a row in one week, and in Lent even twice a week. Reading the psalter in memory of the departed undoubtedly brings them great consolation in itself, both as reading the word of God and as testifying to the love for them and the memory of their living brethren. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitiatory sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered: just as every prayer and every good deed is accepted by Him. Therefore, the custom that exists in many places to ask clergy, in a monastery, or persons specially engaged in this, to read the psalter in memory of the departed, deserves every encouragement, and this request is combined with giving alms for those remembered. But it is much better to read the Psalter by those who commemorate it themselves. Then the benefits will be multifaceted. For those commemorated, this will be even more comforting, because it testifies to the greater degree of love and zeal for them of their living brethren, who themselves PERSONALLY want work hard in their memory, and not to replace yourself in work with others. The Lord will perform the feat of reading not only as a sacrifice for those remembered, but also as a sacrifice for those who bring it, who labor in reading. And, finally, those who read the psalter themselves will receive from the word of God both great consolation and great edification, which they are deprived of by entrusting this good work to others and most often not even being present at it. But alms can and should be given independently, regardless of the reading of the psalter, and its value in this latter case will, of course, be higher, for it will not be associated with the imposition of obligatory labor on the recipient, but will be given according to the commandment of the Savior tuna and therefore it will be accepted by the Lord as extra alms. In our liturgical books there are no specific instructions about the order of reading the psalter for the deceased. In the following psalter, the psalms are printed in a row, subdivided into kathismas and glories without any additions. This is for liturgical use. After all the psalms are placed special troparia and prayers for each kathisma. This is for private reading. In specially published psalms, these troparia and prayers are placed along with each kathisma. If the reading of the psalter about the living and the dead, or about both together, is combined with the usual daily cell reading of the psalter, then for the first and second glory at each kathisma prayers for the living and the dead or for the latter alone can be added, and for each kathisma the usual troparia and prayers. If the reading of the psalter is performed only for the sake of remembrance, especially at the tomb of the deceased, then there is no need to read the troparia and prayers prescribed for the usual cell rule according to the kathismas. It would be more appropriate in all cases, both after each glory and after the kathisma, to read a special memorial prayer. There is no uniformity regarding the formula of commemoration when reading the psalter. In different places, different prayers are used, sometimes arbitrarily composed. The practice of ancient Rus' sanctified the use in this case of that funeral troparion, which should conclude the private reading of funeral canons: Remember, Lord, the soul of Your departed servant, Moreover, during the reading five bows are required, and the troparion itself is read three times. According to the same ancient practice, the reading of the psalter for the repose is preceded by the reading of the canon for the many who have died or for the one who died, after which the reading of the psalter begins. After reading all the psalms, the funeral canon is read again, after which the reading of the first kathisma begins again. This order continues throughout the reading of the psalter for the repose.

READING THE HOLY GOSPEL IN MEMORY OF THE DEPARENTS

There are also other cases of the fruitful effect of reading the Holy Gospel for those for whom it was read. Reading it for the departed finds its basis and justification in the custom firmly established among us: reading the Holy Gospel at the tomb of bishops and priests, and in some places also at the tomb of lay people, especially on Easter Week.

SYNODIK, IN ORDER MEMORIAL

In addition to funeral canons for general commemoration at home prayer, mainly in Meat Saturday or other Saturdays, on which commemoration of all the departed is celebrated, used in the old days special Synodik, that is to say commemoration where in detail, even more than in the canon of Meat Saturday, the commemoration of all the deceased Orthodox Christians, who worked in various ways in life, is performed and by all the varied departures of those who have passed away, everywhere and everywhere in all nations and in all countries and in all places, all faithful men and women, Orthodox Christians, who have died in many ways. During public worship, all the deceased are included in the following formula: all our departed fathers and brothers, the Orthodox who lie here and everywhere. In specially mentioned cases, this formula can be somewhat expanded, but in general it should not be expanded very much, for in public worship, in addition to funeral prayers, there are many others that also cannot be omitted and which must all be arranged so as not to violate the measure and not tire those who pray excessively. Therefore, for example, during public worship one should not even attach any epithets like “warrior, slain, mourner” to the names of the deceased. If anyone has special zeal, who wants to show his love for his brothers who have labored in various ways in life, noting the nature of their earthly service, or to show his brotherly sympathy for his brothers who have labored in various ways by God’s will or by God’s permission for those who have died, - and not in the church, but in the cell and in the house especially, let them correct. This desire of the Orthodox is fully satisfied by the named synodikon, that is, the commemoration.

REMEMBRATION AT HOME PRAYER OF NON-ORTHODOX

At home prayer, with the blessing of the spiritual father, even those who cannot be remembered at church services can be commemorated. It is known about the Monk Macarius of Egypt that he prayed for the dead pagans, and this brought them joy. The Synaxarium of the Meatless Saturday tells that Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov prayed for the pagan emperor Trajan and received notification that his prayer was not fruitless. Such a strict zealot of Orthodoxy as Rev. Theodore the Studite, not allowing open commemoration of the deceased heretical iconoclasts at the liturgy, found it possible for loved ones to commemorate them in secret: “unless everyone in his soul prays for such and does alms for them.”

CANON TO THE MARTYR UARU ABOUT DELIVERY FROM THE TORMENT OF THE DEAD IN ANOTHER RELIEF

Ancient Rus', with all the severity of its attitude towards the dead, found it possible to pray not only for the conversion of the living to the true faith, but also for deliverance from the torment of the dead in other faiths. At the same time, she resorted to the intercession of the holy martyr Huar. In the ancient canons there is a special canon for this case, completely different from the canon placed in the October Menaion under the 19th. This canon is intended primarily for those whose closest relatives or ancestors died outside communion with the Orthodox Church. In addition, apparently, it also means that each of the Orthodox has distant ancestors who died outside the Orthodox Church, about whom, as about their ancestors, it is appropriate to grieve. In accordance with this, the canon asks for the intercession of the holy martyr before the Lord and forgiveness and reversal of His righteous anger grieved by dark evil for the sake of our ancestors , in wickedness, heterodoxy and even in desecration of the dead, (filthy - in Old Russian - pagan). The reason why such a prayer is addressed to the martyr Uar is that he was able to implore the wondrous family of Cleopatra the beginning of our feat(i.e. prayer appeal to the martyr Uar) - Cleopatrina for forgiveness(apparently, forgiveness of her pagan ancestors is assumed). Hence, the guilty perception raises you to prayer . If you pray for the whole world, great martyr, and without ceasing to ask for mercy to all and to every existing criminal of all kinds and fiercely to the Owner who has annoyed and annoyed the deeds of those who are dead, who have completely killed themselves and are nothing from the dead(i.e., who have become nothing better than dead), like those who succeed in evil Also, their passion-bearer, stand for our deceased relatives... falling to the Lord, may he forgive and have mercy on those who sit in darkness. If the prophet sings the mercies of the Lord to proclaim (), then we also believe that His bounties are infinite to this day, and therefore we ask Him: Lamb of God, who redeemed us with Your most pure Blood, Hearing the prayer of Feklino and Blessed Gregory, Methodius with many and Macarius accepted the petition, and gave joy and deliverance to the evil-believers to the dead, and Chrysostom and raised up these prayers to write, - accept therefore the Lord with them and the glorious Uar and their prayers, remembered from us, forgive and have mercy.

CANON OF THE REVEREND PAISIUS THE GREAT, SINGED FOR DELIVERY FROM THE TORMENT OF THE DEAD WITHOUT REPENTANCE

In the ancient canons there is also a canon St. Paisius To the Great One, we sing for deliverance from the torment of the dead without repentance.

PRAYER FOR UNBAPTIZED AND STILLBORN BABIES

Some elders, at the request of mothers whose babies were stillborn or died unbaptized, gave samples of prayers for remembering such babies at home prayer. They also advised not only mothers, out of a sense of Christian love, to pray for babies who in the womb of Orthodox mothers died accidentally from unknown actions or from a difficult birth, or from some carelessness, and therefore did not receive baptism - so that the Lord would baptize them in the sea of His bounties and saved with His ineffable grace. Images of such prayers were, by the way, in the synodikon of Gregory, Metropolitan of Novgorod and St. Petersburg.

PRAYER FOR SUICIDES

The Optina elders allowed even suicides to be remembered at cell prayers, for whom, according to the 14th rule of Timothy of Alexandria, there could be no offering in the Church. Thus, Elder Leonid, in the Leo schema, consoled and instructed one of his students (Pavel Tambovtsev), whose father committed suicide: “Commit both yourself and the fate of your parent to the will of the Lord, the all-wise, all-powerful. Do not test the Most High's fate. Striving with humility to strengthen yourself within the limits of moderate sadness. Pray to the all-good Creator, thereby fulfilling the duty of love and filial duties, according to the spirit of the virtuous and wise: “Seek, O Lord, the lost soul of my father: if it is possible, have mercy. Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin, but Thy holy will be done.” Pray simply, without testing, committing your heart to the right hand of the Most High. Of course, it was not the will of God for such a sad death of your parent: but now it is completely in the will of the Mighty One to cast both soul and body into the fiery furnace, who both humbles and exalts, dies and gives life, brings down to hell and exalts. Moreover, He is so merciful, omnipotent and loving that the good qualities of all earthly beings are nothing before His highest goodness. For this reason, you should not be overly sad. You will say: “I love my parent, which is why I grieve inconsolably.” Fair. But God, without comparison, loved and loves him more than you. This means that you can only leave the eternal fate of your parent to the goodness and mercy of God, who, if He deigns to have mercy, then who can resist Him?

Another Optina elder, Hieroschemamonk Ambrose wrote to one nun: According to church rules, one should not remember a suicide in church, but his sister and relatives can pray for him privately, as Elder Leonid allowed Pavel Tambovtsev to pray for his parent. Write out this prayer... and give it to the family of the unfortunate person. We know of many examples that the prayer conveyed by Elder Leonid calmed and consoled many and turned out to be valid before the Lord.

About our domestic ascetic Schema nun Afanasia? it is said that she, on the advice of Blessed Pelageya Ivanovna of Diveyevo, fasted three times and prayed for 40 days, reading the prayer 150 times daily Rejoice to the Virgin Mary for her drunken brother who hanged himself and received a revelation that, through her prayer, his brother was freed from torment.

So, in general, any prayer feat performed in memory of the living or deceased will please the Lord and will bring undoubted benefit not only to those in whose memory it is performed, but also to those who perform it, for bring for the departed He becomes a partaker of the reward because he shows his love for the salvation of his neighbor: just as he anoints another with the ointment, he first smells fragrant to himself .

There would only be a desire to work for the sake of our beloved brothers, there would be zeal for prayer, and humility and obedience to the Holy Church. Then, without violating church statutes, ways and opportunities will be found to pour out our love for the departed in prayer for them. The commemoration of the departed, out of humility and for obedience to the Holy Church, transferred to our home cell prayer, will be valuable in the eyes of God and more gratifying for the departed than done in church, but with violation and neglect of the Church statutes. Particular attention should be paid to performing alms in memory of the departed, which, according to the words of the righteous Tobit, “delivers from death and does not allow one to go into darkness” (). They allow deeds for the departed, as good and many from the holy fathers, saying elsewhere: decent help, eat alms... Until the second coming of Christ comes, those who are for the departed give them benefit, as the fathers say in divinity, and especially having done a small certain good , when they are compared with the living byahu. Even if the Divine Scripture (as it is necessary to eat) speaks for the admonition of many, God’s love for mankind prevails more and more. If the good and the vile are given equal weight, philanthropy wins. Even if the standard of evil is more burdensome, then the superior goodness overcomes it again. .

And the Old Testament people gave alms in memory of the dead, but only with certain restrictions. “Distribute your loaves at the graves of the righteous, - righteous Tobit instructs his son, - but do not give it to sinners"(). Comprehensive Christian love destroys these boundaries. Rev. Fyodor the Studite advises to give alms for heretics, and the Optina elders command to do the same for suicides.

But this does not mean that in his home prayer the person praying cannot take anything into account, and, for example. in Great Lent sing Christ is Risen or at Easter read: Lord and Master of my life. Essentially and fundamentally, home prayer should be in accordance with church prayer. In church prayer, one specific path is indicated, along which all those praying should follow the same path, for the sake of uniformity and not confusing each other. In home prayer there is a greater breadth of path, but the direction remains the same as in church prayer. And the very breadth and space must have certain boundaries, beyond which the deviation from the right path begins into the crossroads of arbitrariness and arbitrariness. Orthodox not only monks, but also lay people always and everywhere remain novices of the Holy Church, and even in what is given to their freedom, they in every possible way avoid self-will. The Fathers advise that everything should be done with advice and reasoning. This is especially necessary in relation to prayer. About home prayer, one should consult with spiritually experienced people, with elders, and especially with one’s spiritual father, with whose blessing one should, if possible, determine its composition and limits (cf. note 2 on the same page, below).

Prayers for the deceased are a continuation of our relationships with our neighbors. The Holy Church calls upon us, the living, to pray for the departed, for they no longer have the opportunity to pray for themselves. We must pray for the forgiveness of their sins and for the repose of their souls in the heavenly abodes, pray that God’s good memory of them will be eternal...

The commemoration of the dead, first of all, consists of a daily prayer for them, which we include in the circle of our obligatory morning prayers:
Remember, Lord, the most holy patriarchs, eminence metropolitans, archbishops and Orthodox bishops who departed from this life, who served You in the priesthood and parable of the church, and in the monastic rank, and rest in Your eternal settlements with the saints. (Bow)
Remember, Lord, the souls of Your departed servants, my parents (their names, if they died, if they are alive, these words should be omitted), and all relatives in the flesh and forgive them all sins, voluntary and involuntary, granting them the Kingdom and the communion of Your eternal good things and Your endless and blissful life is the pleasure. (Bow)
Remember, O Lord, and all in the hope of resurrection and eternal life, those who have fallen asleep, our fathers and brothers and sisters, and those who lie here and everywhere, Orthodox Christians, and with Thy saints, where the light of Thy face shines, and have mercy on us, for He is Good and Lover of Humanity. Amen. (Bow)
Grant, Lord, remission of sins to all who have previously departed in the faith and hope of resurrection, our fathers, brothers and sisters, and create for them eternal memory. (Thrice)
The dead should certainly be remembered in church services.

Canon and prayer for the one deceased

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with sign of the cross and bow from the waist)

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King God. (Bow) Come, let us bow and fall down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (Bow)

Psalm 90

Living in the help of the Most High, he will dwell in the shelter of the heavenly God. The Lord says: You are my protector and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako Toy will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words. His cloak will overshadow you, and trusting under His wing, His truth will surround you with weapons. Do not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies during the day, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak and demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will be at your right hand, but it will not come close to you. Look at your eyes and see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope; You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not come close to your body. As His Angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone. Tread on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him and glorify him, I will fill him with long days and show him My salvation.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Troparion, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it to everyone that is useful, O Lord, the only Creator, give rest to the soul of Your servant, for place your trust in You, Creator and Maker and our God.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Theotokos: To you and the wall, and the refuge of the imams, and the prayer book favorable to God, Whom you gave birth to, O Blessed Mother of God, salvation for the faithful.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. You alone have sinned and committed evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and overcome, never judge You. Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thou hast revealed to me the unknown and secret wisdom of Thy. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my hearing; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare your praise. As if you had wanted sacrifices, you would have given burnt offerings, but you would not have been pleased. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a contrite and humble heart, God will not despise. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering and the burnt offering, then they will lay the bullock on Your altar.

Canon, tone 8

Song 1

Rest, our Savior, with the righteous of Thy servant, and this one is lodged in Thy courts, as it is written, despising, as good, his sins, voluntary and involuntary, and all things known and not known, Love for mankind.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Theotokos: You shone forth from the Virgin to the world, O Christ God, who showed you the sons of light, have mercy on us.

Song 4

Irmos: I heard, O Lord, Thy mystery, I understood Thy works and glorified Thy Divinity.

He who descended into the underworld, O Christ, hast raised up all that has died, and has departed from us, O Savior, who is generous.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
There is no one without sin, except You are One, Master, for this sake forgive the one who has been removed and forgive him his sins, and place him in paradise.

about the deceased, and illuminate with Your divine light the soul darkened by vain devotions.

And now: Shuyago standing, Most Pure One, beseech Thy Son, O Virgin Lady, to deliver the departed One, as the Savior and God of our Mother.

Song 6

Irmos: I will pour out a prayer to the Lord, and to Him I will proclaim my sorrows, for my soul is filled with evil and my belly is approaching hell, and I pray like Jonah: from aphids, O God, lift me up.

You have overthrown hell, O Lord, and you have resurrected those who have been dead for centuries; and now you have taken him away from us into the bosom of Abraham, O God, and have forgiven all his sins, for you are merciful.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
The commandment that you gave to me, O God, transgressed and were mortal, but You, God, who descended into the grave and resurrected souls from all eternity, do not raise me up, O Master, to torment, but to rest, the departed one cries out to You with us, O Most Merciful.
Glory: We pray to You, the beginningless Father and Son and Holy Soul, embittered by the malice of the soul-evil world and towards You, the Creator, do not reject the soul that has passed into the depths of hell, my Savior God.
And now: From heaven, Christ our God, like rain on the fleece, the Most Pure One, descended upon Thee, drinking the whole world and drying up all the godless streams, flooding the whole earth with His mind, ever-virgin; Pray to him to give peace to Your departed servant.
Lord have mercy. (Three times). Glory to this day:

Kontakion, tone 8

With the saints, rest, O Christ, the soul of Thy servant (Thy servant), where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.

Ikos

Thou art the only Immortal One, having created and created man; We were created from the earth and we will go to the other earth, as you commanded, having created me and created me: for you are the earth and you went back to the earth, and maybe all men will go, creating a funeral lamentation song: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Master Christ God, whenever you want to judge the world, have mercy on the soul of your servant, whom you received from us, crying: our father, God, blessed are you.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
In the food of heaven, where the righteous souls rejoice, those who have served You, consider with them, O Christ, the soul of Your servant, who sang: Our father, God, blessed art thou.
Glory: You saved the three youths of Judah into the fires, sung into the Three Persons, deliver the eternal fire of the departed, who sang to You truly: our father, God, blessed art thou.

Song 8

Irmos: By the Sevenfold, the Chaldean tormentor furiously kindled the cave of the pious, and having seen this better power, they were saved, crying out to the Creator and Savior: bless the youths, sing to the priests, exalt the people to all ages.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
Having finished the course and come running to You, Lord, the departed one now cries out, forgive my sins, O Christ God, and do not judge me, when you want to judge everyone, for I truly cry to You: all the works of the Lord, sing to the Lord and exalt Him forever.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
He bore, O Master, Thy yoke on his frame, and Thy burden was light, even if not always, but in the place of Thy saints indwelled his soul, who sang to Thee, Christ the Savior: bless the youths, sing to the priests, people exalt Him forever.
Glory: The beginningless Holy Trinity, God the Father and the Son and the Holy Soul, in the person of the saints rank the soul of Your departed servant and deliver eternal fire, so that He may praise You, singing unto the ages: bless the youths, sing to the priests, people exalt Him forever.
And now: Thee, Virgin, the prophecies of the face prophesied, for the clairvoyant eyes of Thee saw: for the rod is called Thee, or the eastern door, or the uncut mountain of man. We confess You truly as the Mother of God, who gave birth to the God of all things, and pray to Him for the repose of the departed One forever and ever.

Song 9

Irmos: The heavens were horrified at this, and the ends of the earth were amazed, for God had appeared as a carnal man, and Your womb was more spacious than the heavens. Thus Thea, the Mother of God, the Angels and the people of the ranks are magnified.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
Jesus, my God, Savior, Adamle, you took away crime and tasted death, and freed people from it, O Merciful One. In the same way we pray to Thee, the Most Merciful: for the rest of the Lord, for He is good, in the courts of Thy saints, for He alone is all-good and merciful.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thy departed servant (Thy departed servant).
There is no one, O Merciful One, who has not sinned among men, except You alone, Jesus Christ, take away the sins of the whole world. Moreover, having cleansed Your servant from sins, establish in Your holy courts, for You are the life and peace, and light, and joy of all who have pleased You.
Glory: All human nature marveled at how this only-begotten Son of the beginningless Father received flesh from the Virgin through the action of the Holy Spirit, and suffered like a man, so that the dead could be brought to life. Thus, now departed from us, we diligently pray to Thee, in the land of the living, as Good, dwell.
And now: We call You the Bride, Most Pure, the Invisible Father, and the Mother of the Son, incarnated from You by the Holy Spirit, and we offer Your prayer service for Your departed servant: For You are the helper of the Imam, the earthly, and we magnify You with love singing.
It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. The most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison the Seraphim, without the corruption of God
We magnify the words of the present Mother of God, You. (Bow)

Evil will not come to you, and wound will not come near your body. As His Angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone. Tread on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him and glorify him, I will fill him with long days and show him My salvation.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, glory to You, O God. (Thrice)
Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Troparion, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, build all the love for mankind and give it to everyone that is useful, O One Creator, rest, O Lord, the souls of Your servant, for I have placed my trust in You, the Creator and Creator and our God.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Theotokos: To you and the wall, and the refuge of the imams, and the prayer book favorable to God, Whom you gave birth to, O Blessed Mother of God, salvation of the faithful.

Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins.

Canon, voice 1st

Song 1

Irmos: Your victorious right hand is gloriously glorified in the fortress: that Bo, Immortal, like the almighty erased the enemy, re-made the path of depth for the Israelis.

The gates of death and faith, with your death you crushed the Immortal One, open the gates, O Lord, more than the mind of immortality to those who have fallen asleep, through your prayers, the passion-bearer.

Yes, we are worthy of the Divine life, you descended to death, you dispelled the same treasures, you brought us out from there; now, O Life-Giver, they have been reposed.
Glory: You have received my corruptible and lifeless things, you have clothed yourself with incorruption, and you have ascended to endless life and bliss, where you are generous, and you have received them, rest.
And now: Let us sing faithfully to the hedgehog who gave birth to the Word of God from God: For the All-pure path of life has become for the dead, even as we glorify the Receiver of God and the Mother of God.

Song 3

Irmos: The only one who knows the weakness of the human being, and mercifully did not imagine, girded me with strength from on high, crying out to You, Holy One: animated by the temple of Your ineffable glory, O Lover of Mankind.
Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
For the One who is good, for the One who is abundantly merciful, who has departed piously to Thee, rest in the heavenly settlements, where there is indescribable joy and pleasure, and where the martyrdom rejoices.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
You alone appeared on earth, my Savior, sinless, who takes away the sins of the world as you are merciful; Those who have departed from this world by faith, rest their souls in the courts of Thy saints, in the sweetness of heaven, O Lover of mankind.
Glory: You have overthrown the power of death, you have poured out an endless belly for all the faithful, O Lord; In this regard, teach those who have departed piously, despising immeasurable sins, and forgiving their sins, Lover of mankind.
And now: Without seed was conceived, Pure, the ever-present Word, who came to us carnally, and destroyed the fortress of death, and bestowed resurrection and eternal life on the dead with His mercy.

Sedalen, voice 6th

Truly all kinds of vanity, but life is shadow and sleepiness, for every earthly being is troubled in vain, as the Scripture says: when we have gained peace, then we will dwell in the tomb, where together the king and the beggar are. Likewise, O Christ our God, rest in peace, as a Lover of mankind.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Theotokos: All-Holy Mother of God, during my life, do not forsake me, do not entrust me to human intercession, but intercede and have mercy on me.

Song 4

Irmos: The mountain overshadowed by the grace of God, the perspicacious Habakkuk, having seen before your eyes, proclaim to the Holy One from You the Holy One for our salvation and renewal.
Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
Having killed hell by Your invincible power, You were imputed among the dead, the only freedom, Christ, the souls of the freedom of the pious, and the condemnation within it, the holy martyr with the prayers.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
He who is like the Lord of all, who is the opposite of your slaughter from Adam, has given deliverance and a price; We also pray to Your bounty, rest in peace, grant forgiveness of sins.
Glory: You have accepted, O my Savior, your position in the grave; and even the condemned dead lived in their tombs, like God, you raised them up. Now the everlasting life is likened to the departed, as the One Lover of Mankind.
And now: The human race was saved by Your birth: For You gave birth to us a hypostatic Life, the consumption of death and the rise to life, the Most Immaculate Lady of the Theotokos.

Song 5

Irmos: Enlightened by the radiance of Your coming, O Christ, and illuminating the ends of the world with Your Cross, enlighten the hearts with the light of Your godly understanding, those who sing Thee Orthodoxy. Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
Healed mortals from hell, death is accepted, and you have dulled the sting of death; but give rest to them, whom you have received, O Life-Giver, martyr with prayers.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
O free men, mortification and corruption, do the souls of those faithfully reposed in the courts of Thy saints, from where sorrow will flee, and joy will be established.
Glory: Paradise for those who were hanged with You, as You have opened, now receive souls, Master, having reposed in You by faith, grant them the firstborn to be established in the Church.
And now: Delivering the hopes of those who have the power in Thee, quietly instruct them to the refuge of the Divine will, By Thy maternal boldness towards Thy Son, blessed All-Immaculate One.

Song 6

Irmos: We have been through the last abyss, we have not been delivered, we are counted as sheep of the slaughter, save Thy people, our God: for Thou art the strength of the weak and the correction.
Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
As you are merciful, grant forgiveness of sins to those who have passed away, and grant eternal pleasure, where Your grace shines and illuminates Your passion-bearers.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
Whom the world flowed from Your side You redeemed, having fallen asleep by faith, O Christ, deliver with Your honest Passion, for You gave Yourself a price for all.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
Having created me first with the most pure hands, and bestowed the spirit, and having fallen to the earth of evil, having renewed the blush, now rest the souls of those who have passed away.
Glory: O Lord, grant to Thy luminous palace to indwell those who have fallen asleep in faith in Thee, despising their sins, for they are good and merciful and abundantly merciful.
And now: We sing to You, Blessed Pure One, Who for our sake rose up, who exist in darkness and the shadow of death, the never-setting Sun of truth, for You were the intercessor of our salvation.

Kontakion, tone 8

With the saints, rest, O Christ, the souls of Thy servant, who bear no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.

Ikos

Thou art the One Immortal One, Who created and created man; We were created from the earth and we will go to the other earth, as you commanded, having created me and created me: for you are the earth and you went back to the earth, and maybe all men will go, creating a funeral lamentation song: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
Let the radiance of Your most pure glory be illuminated, O Christ, from the storm of the world to those who have departed to You, and grant them worthy as martyrs to cry out to You: O God, praised of the fathers, blessed art Thou.

Song 8

Irmos: In the cave, the children of Israel, as if in the furnace of the kindness of piety, sparkled more pure than gold, saying: Bless all the works of the Lord, sing to the Lord and exalt to all ages.
Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.
Having washed away all the defilement of Your fallen servants with the dew, You are worthy to sing with songs: bless, all the works of the Lord, the Lord, sing and exalt Him to all ages.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.

For God, who loves mankind and is merciful, have mercy on Your creation and rest in the villages of Your saints, where all the martyrs rejoice, having been delivered from the temporary by faith, O Great Merciful One.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your departed servants.
Have an abyss of mercy, overcoming Your servants' sins, and theirs, welcome, chosen, rest in the depths of Abraham, Lover of mankind, and with Lazarus dwell in Your light.
Glory: Having been the Deliverer and Savior of the human race, for the sake of the crucifixion, even now you have departed from us, as the Benefactor, granting Divine pleasure, and an incorruptible life, and joy and lightness.
And now: O even more than the mind of Your wonders! You, Virgin, are the only one who has given everyone under the sun a new miracle to understand,
Most Pure One, Your Nativity in bewilderment; In the same way, we all magnify You.

The reposed servant of God, our father and brothers and all Orthodox Christians, of whom we make remembrance, eternal memory. (Thrice)
We read the troparion three times with bows: Rest, O Lord, to the souls of your departed servants (bow), and as much as men have sinned in this life, You, as the Lover of Mankind, forgive them and have mercy (bow), deliver eternal torment (bow), to the Heavenly Give (bow) to the partakers of the kingdom, and do good for our souls (bow).

The various rites and prayers for the departed, contained in church liturgical books, constitute the enormous wealth of the Church. However, for many modern Christians, this church treasury remains largely closed, since liturgical books are inaccessible and difficult to use. At the same time, various non-canonical texts of prayers for the dead have now spread, usually taken from Uniate prayer books or newly composed.

An outstanding expert on the Church Rule and confessor of the faith of the past century, Saint Athanasius (Sakharov, +1962), in his book “On the Commemoration of the Dead according to the Rule of the Orthodox Church,” points out the need for obedience to the Church in all spiritual work, especially in prayer. Prayer not according to church rites, he says, is like that “strange fire” that Nadab and Abihu, the unworthy sons of the priest Aaron, brought to God. By acting arbitrarily, we can take the most dangerous and disastrous path of pride and, instead of doing good, cause harm to ourselves and others. This applies not only to temple and public worship, but also to home prayer. Church ranks and the following, in particular, and the rules of remembrance of the dead, were formed from the prayer experience of the saints, under the guidance of the Spirit of God, and Christians accepted them with humility and love - not as an unbearable yoke, but as good and easy, received from a beloved and loving Mother - and , following them, they were saved. Likewise, everyone who wants to follow the path of salvation must be obedient children of the Church and try to assimilate the structure of her life and the prayer experience of the fathers, without inventing anything of their own and without taking into use anything alien.

This collection, together with the book “Psalms and Canons for the Dead,” to which it is a supplement, aims to make the statutory funeral services accessible to a wide number of parishioners and to facilitate their ability to pray for the departed in accordance with the rules of the Orthodox Church. It includes the canons about the deceased contained in the liturgical books - Octoechos and the Followed Psalter. The canons are set out for reading by the laity in home prayer.

Canons about the dead are included in most funeral services; they are very diverse in content and mood, depending on their purpose.

Canons about the dead in 8 voices are placed in the Saturday service of Octoechos as the second canons at Matins. According to the Charter, they are supposed to be sung on Friday evening. These same canons can be included in the requiem service; they can also be read in home prayer for the departed.

The canons about the departed Octoechos were written by the Monk Theophan the Confessor, Inscribed, Bishop of Nicaea. His name is indicated in the acrostic canon of the 5th tone (and in the Slavic Octoechos he is, in addition, indicated separately in the 3rd, 6th and 7th voices), however, other canons about the deceased of the Octoechos undoubtedly belong to the Monk Theophanes. The canons are placed in numerical order, which is indicated in acrostics: “By faith I offer the first song to the dead,” “To the dead I weave the second song,” etc. All of them are inextricably linked and form a single whole.

The Monk Theophan the Confessor was born in Jerusalem into a Christian family. Together with his older brother Theodore, he studied at the Lavra of St. Sava, where both brothers accepted monasticism and the rank of presbyter. The brothers Theodore and Theophanes became famous as champions of icon veneration. On behalf of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, they went to Constantinople to denounce the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian (813-820) and defend Orthodoxy; Subsequently, they denounced the iconoclast emperors Michael Balba (820-829) and Theophilus (829-842), for which they had to endure imprisonment, hunger, and severe torment. Emperor Theophilus ordered offensive verses to be written on their faces with hot needles, in which the holy confessors were spoken of as “vessels of superstitious delusion.” This is where the name adopted by both brothers comes from - “Inscribed”. The Monk Theodore died in prison. Theophan, his brother in flesh and spirit, placed the body in a coffin, singing funeral hymns over it - perhaps precisely those funeral canons that were later included in the Octoechos. The Monk Theophan lived to see the end of the iconoclastic persecution of Orthodoxy. His confessional feat lasted 25 years - from 817 to 842. Upon his return from exile, he was ordained Bishop of Nicaea by the holy Patriarch Methodius († 847). Simeon Logothet, reporting this, says: “When there were those who were dissatisfied with this, pointing out that he was a Syrian and Orthodox - there was no one to guarantee that, Saint Methodius answered, pointing out not his forehead: there is no need to desire a better testimony after this inscription." Soon after this, around 850, the Monk Theophan died. The Church commemorates him on October 11 (24).

The Monk Theophan was the author of many works, including in defense of icon veneration; he also wrote many church hymns - he owns about 150 canons in the Octoechos, Menaion and Triodion. In the Greek Menaion we read the following words in his honor: “Like a bright light, you illuminate the entire sun with the light of your dogmas; like David, striking the zither, you sing worthy songs to the saints of Christ and proclaim all of Epirus (the region where the Monk Theophan was a bishop). That is why you are worthily glorified, sacred monk Theophanes.” The canons about the dead belong to the best creations of St. Theophan; their high dignity is noted by many researchers of church hymnography.

The troparions of the canons are arranged in the following order: the first troparion contains a prayer to the holy martyrs; we encourage them to intercede before God for our departed, especially strong, since they endured countless torments, shed blood for the Lord and did not spare their lives for His sake. In addition, the appeal to martyrs in the canons about the dead, which is generally common in funeral services, reminds us that these hymns go back to the funeral singing of the first Christians near the remains of the holy martyrs for Christ. The chorus before the first troparion, “Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel,” corresponds to the content of these troparions.

Then follow two troparions containing our petitions for the dead. In them we present before the Lord Jesus Christ everything that can incline Him to mercy, we point to the Divine Wisdom by which we were created in the beginning, we remember His Divine exhaustion, His suffering, death and resurrection, which renewed the fallen human race. Having destroyed death and hell, He gave us immortality, delivered us from death and corruption. The Lord knows the weakness of our nature, and He is indescribably merciful, “the ever-flowing Source of goodness,” “all sweetness, all desire and insatiable love, all unspeakable kindness.” He is the Lord of all, having power over the living and the dead. In His Kingdom there are many abodes, and He “divides them to everyone according to wealth, according to the measure of virtue.” We do not dare to say anything before the face of God about the eternal fate of the souls of the departed; we only humbly remind that they are His servants and, “having been cleansed from the ancient ancestral fall by baptism and again by generation and having a rod of power - His Cross, they passed through the worldly sea” (canons 4- 1st and 8th voices). In the last troparions of each song of the canons, we turn our prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos and ask Her intercession for us and our departed.

In the sedalna according to the 3rd canto and in the kontakion according to the 6th canto, we pray to the merciful Master and Lord to forgive the sins of the departed and to rest them together with the saints, where there are no illnesses, no sorrows, no sighs, to lead them into endless life. Ikos gives us an example of a Christian attitude towards death: the sorrow that is natural for a person in the face of death is dissolved in him by humble submission to the will of the Creator and praise to the immortal God: we are slaves of the Creator of us, we obey Him, and do not resist. “For something created, although from the earth, but not intended for the earth,” explains Bishop Afanasy (Sakharov), “the return to the earth, as not corresponding to its purpose, naturally causes a funeral sob. But for a Christian, this weeping is not like the funeral weeping of those who have no hope (see 1 Thess. 4:13). For those who have hope, the funeral sob about returning to the earth is dissolved by the thought that this is being done by God's command. And whatever is commanded by God is all good. Therefore, a Christian even while weeping praises the Lord, his funeral sob is intertwined with the angelic praise of God: “halleluia,” which in itself can never be a sob, but always, even in funeral successions, remains angelic praise.”

The Followed Psalter contains a special canon about a single deceased person. The use of this canon along with the canons about the deceased in 8 voices is convenient in that the mention of the deceased in it is in the singular, whereas in the canons about the deceased it is in the plural, and therefore there is no need to adapt the text to the commemoration of one or many. For ease of reading, we give this canon separately for the deceased (masculine gender) and the deceased (feminine gender).

The canon about the one deceased is sung in the 8th tone; it begins with a prayer for those praying themselves - with a request to give us a word for fervent prayer. There are no appeals to the martyrs, and in the third troparion (on “Glory”) of each song, except the last, petitions for the deceased (and for ourselves) are addressed to the Holy Trinity. With boldness and hope we ask the Lord for mercy towards our deceased, with whom, perhaps quite recently, “we have gone down together many times, and together in the house of God,” and he prays with us: “I have transgressed the commandment that You gave me, and became mortal, but You, Christ God, who descended into the grave and raised the souls of those who died from the ages, did not raise me up to torment, but to rest.”

In the Old Russian “Psalms”, before the canon about the only deceased, there is the following preface on behalf of the deceased, addressed to his spiritual father. It can also be addressed to everyone who could pray for it.

Preface to the canon about the deceased

My spiritual father and master, name, do for me, for God’s sake, last love and such mercy: sing this canon for me on thirds (third day), on dessiatines (ninth day), on fortieths (fortieth day). If you cannot do this, then sing it at least on one of these days or on some other day, only before the forties (before the fortieth day). If, in addition to this, you deign to sing it, then you will bring me even greater benefit and you yourself will receive a greater reward from God, who said: “When you measure according to measure, it will be measured back to you” (Matthew 7:2). And you, father, for God’s sake, show mercy to my sinful soul, pray for it to the Lord, and the Lord our God will repay you for this, and have mercy on you, as you are merciful, for He Himself said: “Blessed are you, for you will have mercy.” (Matt. 5:7). And alms for me is if someone prays for my soul and asks for mercy from God, forgiveness of sins, and eternal peace. But I have already asked for mercy; I will also say about spiritual love, which I mentioned at the beginning. “The fulfillment of the law is love” (Rom. 13:10). “Greater love has no one to sow,” says the Lord, “but whoever lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). But I do not ask you, father, to lay down your soul for my soul; but pray diligently for me to God or bow as much as you please. In this way you will fulfill the Savior’s commandment about love, and thereby you will greatly help me. Don’t just think about the fact that my body is already dead, but rather think about how hard, and bitter, and painful, and filled with sadness and melancholy, death is for a person, especially for a sinner. Remember also the offensive denunciations from demons during the separation of the soul from the body, and the torture of every word and thought, voluntary or involuntary. Think also about the time when the holy Angels will lead the soul through the air to the ordeal of the fierce ruler of the world; what fears and threats exist there for souls, as many saints write about. when they bring a soul to worship the throne of the Glory of the Lord, and the Lord commands to show that soul the dwellings of the saints - the righteous soul for consolation, and the sinner for great sorrow - for he will see with his own eyes what blessings he has been deprived of. Then the Lord will command to bring the soul into dark dungeons, into the depths of hell and show it terrible torments, unspeakable in words and unthinkable by the mind - for only by faith do we believe that such torments exist. And now, in all that was written before, my soul is in distress. That is why, knowing in advance that all this should happen, I first wrote this petition with my own hand. Do me mercy, God-loving sir, for God’s sake, share these sorrows with me. Just as we once ate and drank and rejoiced together many times, so now be sick with me. For the Apostle also teaches us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15). Therefore, mourn with me by doing as I ask you, so that you will help me get rid of eternal sorrows. For I hope that, seeing your love and the fact that you did not despise my prayer, God will not despise your prayer, and will give you, at your request, everything useful for your salvation, and will have mercy on me. If He allowed the demonic legion, upon request, to enter the herd of pigs, will He not hear the prayer of His servant and fulfill His promise? For He said: “If you ask everything in prayer as a believer, you will receive... Heaven and earth pass by, but My words will not pass by” (Matthew 21, 22; 24, 35). Be healthy in Christ and be saved by the prayers of all the saints. Amen.

Prayer for the dead (as well as for the living) is the duty of everyone Orthodox Christian, for they also pray for him, and he thus becomes a debtor to everyone - both the living and the dead. Prayer is at the same time an expression of Christian love, the need for love for one’s fellow believers. After all, “we are all one body, both in heaven and on earth, we are all partakers of the Life-giving Theanthropic Body - the Church and the Church; the same life of the Church both on earth and in heaven, for there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one communion, one virtues, one grace.”

Church hymns about the departed they tell us that all believers do not die, but live forever in the Lord, that the Lord only resettles His servants to another life, for, according to the word of Christ, “God... is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for He is all alive” (Luke 20:38). They testify to the closeness of those who died in Christ to us, to the unity of the heavenly and earthly Church. And prayer is the main force of this unity.

There is much evidence that the prayers of the Church bring undoubted benefits to the deceased. Great benefit also comes to those who undertake prayer work in their memory. “Offerings for the dead are not in vain,” says St. John Chrysostom, “supplications are not in vain, alms are not in vain: the Holy Spirit established all this, wanting us to benefit through each other.”

Funeral chants remind the living of the common fate of all inhabitants of the earth. They talk about the original purpose of man, created in the image of the Trinitarian God and placed by the Creator “in the midst of humility and majesty”; his body was created from earth and “inspired by Divine inspiration,” the spirit of life (see Gen. 1, 26; 2, 7). It was not intended for death and corruption, but for living in paradise, for participation in eternity, in Divine life. They also say that man did not preserve this Divine dignity, violated the commandment and was cast out of paradise and condemned to return again to the land from which he was taken. Is there any sorrow in the world greater than that which a person experiences at the sight of death? The sadness of the bitter separation from our loved ones is combined with the grief that we, sinners, are faced with the same path of the whole earth. Steadily walking along it, we will someday - perhaps soon - reach “the same abode (the tomb).” Will our loved ones then be able to good hope to ask us for mercy from God, praying in the words of church successions, citing our virtues, saying that we “placed our hope in Christ,” “served Him with all our hearts,” “carried His yoke and His light burden on our shoulders”? The Holy Fathers teach that such thoughts and feelings are very beneficial for the living, for they instill in their souls “the saving fear of death, which brings holiness.”

The hymns of the funeral canons turn the mournful gaze of those praying to Christ the Savior, revealing the most important dogmatic truths of Christianity. The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God and the perfect God, “without leaving the Fatherly bosom,” came to earth to save the lost human race, seduced by the devil, to “renew most redly” man who had fallen to the earth; “Mother by nature,” He destroyed Himself, taking on the form of a servant” (Phil. 2:7), voluntarily took upon Himself the consequences of our sin, knew all our weaknesses, all the limitations of our existence, except for sinful passions that depend on our freedom. The only Sinless One, not involved in any sin, He took upon Himself the sins of the world, paid for everyone with Himself, redeemed the world with His Blood, healed our infirmities with His wounds; renewed human nature buried by passions. “The Treasure of Immortality,” hypostatic Life and the Source of life, having power over life and death, accepted death for the salvation of all, was in the grave, dead in the flesh, numbered among the dead - and with His death abolished the law of death, crushed its gates, dulled its sting, killed her strength; With his “life-giving death he put to death the mortifier” (the devil), delivered “those who fell into the dust of death,” and exuded immortal life. Having descended into hell, with the lordship of His Divinity he dispelled its darkness, abolished its dark kingdom and resurrected its prisoners. The God-man Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins and can grant the departed an eternal inheritance, the Kingdom of Heaven; but we must beg for forgiveness of sins, and salvation, and every gift that the Lord brings - to us and our loved ones, living and deceased; This expresses our real participation in the Church - the living body of Christ, our participation in the Theanthropic economy of salvation.

By participating in church services, Christians many times throughout their lives, day after day, year after year, especially during the days of Holy Week, mysteriously experience all these deeds of God that save us. On the bright Easter days, rejoicing and rejoicing in the Risen Christ, the Church again and again reminds believers that the Lord Jesus Christ has raised us “from the dead to a living hope” (1 Pet. 1:3), to a hope that conquers death and enters into immortality. He opened the way to His eternal Kingdom for us, “revealed the entrances of the belly,” and kindled our hearts with a thirst for endless life. And while time has not yet ended for us, while the Lord shows us the wondrous miracle of His patience and mercy, it is only up to us to take this path and establish ourselves on it with the help of the grace of Christ, in the Holy Spirit.

The gracious remembrance that death has truly been defeated throughout the universe and human nature is destined for eternal life with the Lord in “everlasting joy” transforms our tragedy and sorrow in the face of death into prayerful sadness and joy, the sadness of temporary parting, the joy of eternal life.

The canons about the deceased (both about the one and about the many) can be read in home prayer by choice and desire at any time, except for the twelve and great holidays, as well as the days of Holy and Bright Weeks.

For many deceased, one of the canons about the deceased in 8 voices is read, preferably the canon of the current voice (that is, the voice in which the hymns of the Octoechos are sung that week). This canon can be read for all your relatives and loved ones on the eve of Saturday.

There is the following ancient church tradition about the benefits of remembering the dead on the eve of Saturday. The Monk Macarius of Egypt († 390) once, while passing through the desert, found the skull of some dead man lying on the ground. The elder asked who he was? And the skull replied that he was the chief priest of idols among the pagans who lived in this place and, calling Saint Macarius by name and spirit-bearer, told him that when Christians pray on Saturday for the Christians who have gone before, then “there is light on them from Friday evening until Monday dawn." “Then we (the souls of the infidels),” he concluded his story, “have some consolation.”

With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it to everyone that is useful. O Lord, the only Creator, give rest to the souls of Your servants, who have placed their trust in You, Creator and Maker and our God.

Psalm 50

And we read the canon.

The beginning of the canon, common to all funeral canons

Canon, voice 1st,

its edge:

“By faith I offer the first hymn to those who have fallen asleep”

Song 1

Irmos: Your victorious right hand will be gloriously glorified in the fortress: she, Immortal, as omnipotent, has erased the opposite, having made new the path of the depths of the Israelites.

Chorus: God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel (bow).

The gates of death and faith, You have crushed with Your death, Immortal One, open the gates, O Lord, more than the mind, of immortality to the departed, through the prayers of Your passion-bearer.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of your departed servants (bow).

May we be worthy of the Divine life, you descended to death, and you, having poured out the treasures, took us out from there: now, O Life-Giver, the departed rest.

Glory: You have received my corruptible and lifeless things, you have clothed yourself in incorruptibility, and you have ascended to endless life and bliss, where you are generous, and you have received them, rest in peace.

And now: Who gave birth to the Word of God from God, let us faithfully sing: So, O All-Pure One, the path of life has become for the dead, Even as the Receiver of God and the Mother of God we glorify.

Song 3

Irmos: Alone, knowing the weakness of the human being and mercifully not imagining it, girdling me with strength from on high, crying out to You, Holy One, animated by the temple of Your ineffable glory, Lover of Mankind.

As one who is good, as one who is abundantly merciful, who has departed piously to You, rest in the heavenly settlements, where there is inexpressible joy and pleasure and where the martyrdom rejoices.

You alone appeared on earth, my Savior, sinless, who takes away the sins of the world as you are merciful; May those who have departed from this world by faith rest their souls in the courts of Thy saints, in the sweetness of the heavens O Lover of Mankind.

Glory: You have overthrown the power of death, you have poured out an endless belly upon all the faithful, O Lord: in this regard, do thou who departed piously, despising immeasurable sins and forgiving their sins, O Lover of Mankind.

And now: Without seed was conceived, Pure, the ever-present Word, who came to us carnally, and destroyed the fortress of death, and bestowed resurrection and eternal life on the dead with His mercy.

Lord have mercy ( three times).

Sedalen, voice 6th

Glory even now, Theotokos:

Song 4

Irmos: Mount Thee, overshadowed by the grace of God, the perspicacious Habakkuk saw before his eyes, and proclaimed from Thee to the Holy One of Israel for our salvation and renewal.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

Having killed hell by Your invincible power, You were imputed among the dead, the only freedom, Christ, the souls of freedom of the pious, and the condemnation within it, the holy martyr with the prayers.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

He who is like the Lord of all, who has given us the price of deliverance from those who are worthy of Adam’s slaughter; We also pray to Your bounty, repose, granting remission of sins.

Glory: Thou hast accepted, O my Saviour, the condemned dead who were in the grave and who lived in the tombs, as if God had raised them up. Now the everlasting life is like the one who has passed away, as there is only one Lover of mankind.

And now: Having saved the human race by Thy Nativity, Thou hast given birth to us a hypostatic Life, the consumption of death and the rise to life, the Most Immaculate Mother of God, the Lady.

Song 5

Irmos: Enlightening with the radiance of Your coming, O Christ, and illuminating with Your Cross the ends of the world, enlighten the hearts with the light of Your God-Understanding of those who Orthodoxy sing Thee.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

Heal from mortal hell, you accept death and dull the sting of death; but give rest to them, whom you have received, O Life-Giver, martyr with prayers.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

O free men, the souls of those faithfully reposed have mortified and corrupted in the courts of Thy saints, from where all sorrow has fled, and joy has been established.

Glory: For Thou hast opened Paradise to the hanged One; now, O Lord, accept the souls that have come to You by faith, giving them the firstborn to be established in the Church.

And now: Delivering the hopes of those who have in Thee, quietly guide them to the refuge of the Divine will, with Thy motherly boldness towards Thy Son, O Blessed All-Immaculate One.

Song 6

Irmos: The last abyss has passed us by, there is no deliverer, we are counted as sheep of the slaughter, save Thy people, our God, for Thou art the strength of the weak and the correction.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

As you are merciful, grant forgiveness of sins to those who have passed away, and grant eternal pleasure, where Your grace shines and illuminates Your passion-bearers.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

With the blood that flowed from Your side, You redeemed the world, having fallen asleep by faith, Christ, deliver with Your honest Passion, for You gave Yourself a price for everyone.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

Who created me with the most pure hands and the bestowed spirit, and who, having fallen to the earth of evil, again renewed most redly, now give rest to the souls of the departed.

Glory: O Lord, grant Thy luminous chamber to indwell those who have fallen asleep in faith in Thee, despising their sins, for they are good and merciful and abundantly merciful.

And now: We sing to Thee, Blessed Pure One, who for our sake rose up, who exist in darkness and the shadow of death, the never-setting Sun of truth, for Thou art the intercessor of our salvation.

Lord have mercy ( three times). Glory to this day.

Kontakion, tone 8

Ikos

Song 7

Irmos: Let us consider your clever cave, O Mother of God, faithful, just as you saved the three youths, exalted, renew the world, in your womb is wholly whole, the God of praise of the fathers and glorified.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

May the radiance of Your Most Pure glory be illuminated, O Christ, to those who have departed from the storm of the world to You, and grant them worthy as martyrs to cry out to You: O God, praised of the fathers, blessed art Thou.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

Adam was truly new, Adam's Creator, Who alone took Adam's oath. We also pray to You: those who have passed away may rest in the sweetness of paradise, O Christ, for He alone is merciful.

Glory: Who knows only our natural weakness, as God, is good and merciful, all of whom You have put aside, and where the unfathomable light shines upon Your face, teach, O Christ, the God praised and glorified of the Fathers.

Who ever pours out rich mercy, piously and ever sincerely receiving Thee, in Thy house, Christ, in Thy wondrous tabernacle, grant a place of weakness, O Master, to Thy servant, for He is gracious.

Glory: Thou art the strongest against death, O Christ: having bound that also, Thou hast delivered us, and now deliver us from the sowing of corruption, for Thou art Good, and grant the sacrament of Thy radiance.

And now: Having confirmed my wavering mind, Mother of God, strengthen with Divine commands, Who was born from Your sanctified womb and abolished, O Lady, the dark kingdom of hell.

Song 2

Irmos: Having established me on the rock of faith, you have enlarged my mouth against my enemies, for my spirit has rejoiced, always singing: there is nothing holy like our God, and nothing is righteous than Thee, O Lord.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

Thy beauty will be illuminated in faith by Thy martyrs, who are rich in mercy; for Thou art our God, and there is none more righteous than Thee, O Lord.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

In the place of coolness, in the bosom of Abraham, Thy chosen one, grant to dwell as Thy servant, as he is generous, crying unto Thee: For Thou art our God, and there is none more righteous than Thee, O Lord.

Glory: Thou shalt dwell in the heavenly chambers with the wise virgins who have come, O Master, receive Thy servants, the luminary-bearers, whom Thou hast removed by Thy will from the temporary, O One Lover of Mankind.

And now: You killed me and returned me to the earth, having given birth to the Life-Giver, and you raised me from the lowest hell, the Theotokos glorifying and venerating You by faith, Most Pure One, all-sung to You.

Lord have mercy ( three times).

Sedalen, voice 6th

Truly all kinds of vanity, but life is shadow and sleepiness, for every earthly being is troubled in vain, as the Scripture says: when we have gained peace, then we will dwell in the tomb, where kings and beggars are together. Likewise, O Christ our God, give rest to those who have passed away, as a lover of mankind.

Glory even now, Theotokos: All-Holy Mother of God, do not forsake me during my life, do not entrust me to human intercession, but intercede and have mercy on me.

Song 4

Irmos: I sing to Thee, for with my ears, O Lord, I heard and was horrified: for you are coming to me, seeking me, the lost one. In this way I glorify Your condescension upon me, O Many-Merciful One.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

With hope and love, and with an Orthodox mind, even more than the mind of Thy glory, grant Thy servants, O Christ, Thy many love for mankind and the chosen martyr's prayers.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

Like an ever-flowing stream of sweetness, you have ever fed the chosen ones, O Lord; with them, even those who are now departed, O Christ, feed you with your ineffable mercy at the waters of abandonment.

Glory: You rule over the living, Master, and you rule over the dead. You have resurrected the dust of the earth by Your power. In the same way, those who came to You in Your courts, O Savior, inhabited.

And now: You healed Eve’s contrition and ancient curses, You gave birth to the Creator, who was able to correct us, defeated by sins, the only Mother of God, the Virgin Mother.

Song 5

Irmos: Giver of light and Creator of ages, O Lord, instruct us in the light of Your commandments: is it for You that we know no other god.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

Thou hast lifted us up from the dark treasures of hell, having put us to death and laid in ashes, and Thou hast delighted, O Blessed One, and having united the saints with an army of Angels.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

For the hedgehog you came to save us, O Christ, now accept those who were given to you piously, for they are the only good ones, into the bosom of Abraham, and place them with Lazarus.

Glory: Thou hast allowed, O Lord, my flight and long battle, I was first the intercessor and prayer book of reconciliation for Thee; and now Thy servants, having mercy, rest.

And now: Under Thy roof, Mother of God, those who trust in Thee are saved: Thou hast given birth to us, the Giver of Life, who gives life by all will.

Song 6

Irmos: Lying in the abyss of sin, I call upon the unsearchable abyss of Thy mercy: lift me up from aphids, O God.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

The indescribable and Divine lordship, where the faces of martyrdom, have been vouchsafed even from the earth, omnipotent by Thy will, O Lover of mankind.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

Those who created, O Life-Giver Christ, man from the earth, whom you left from us, rest in peace, giving them the remission of the wicked, as you are merciful and lover of mankind.

Glory: Be illumined by the goodness of Thy glory, having left life, and to Thy ineffable light, O Master, having passed on to rest.

And now: Delivering zealously, those who call upon Thee, the Most Holy Lady, who gave birth to God, who possesses life and death, appeared.

Lord have mercy ( three times). Glory to this day.

Kontakion, tone 8

Ikos

Thou art the only Immortal One, Who created and created man; We were created from the earth, and we will go to the same earth, as He who created me and gave me commanded: for you are the earth, and you have gone back to the earth, and even all men will go, making a song of funeral lamentation: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Song 7

Irmos: The ungodly command of the lawless tormentor rose high in flames. Christ spread spiritual dew to the godly youth, He is blessed and glorified.

God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel.

Who is everywhere, you have come down, O Lord, to save the race of man who was deceived of old. In the same way, the martyrs pray to Thee: O Savior, give rest to these whom You have left from the earth, into the land of the meek.

Rest, O Lord, to the souls of Your departed servants.

Thou didst shake off the mortification of the dead, and became free in the dead, One Himself, Christ; and now, O Master, deliver Thy servants from the slaying of sin, revealing them to be heirs of Thy Kingdom.

Glory: By Thy many ineffable mercy and the immeasurable abyss of Thy love for mankind, O Christ, grant forgiveness to those who have been reposed, and by Thy grace they have been purified of these.

And now: As if you were a lamp of Divine glory, bearing radiance, the Virgin appeared to us in spirit and flesh, and consumed the darkness of hell with the lightness of Her Divinity, God-rejoicing.

Psalm 90

Living in the help of the Most High, he will dwell in the shelter of the heavenly God. The Lord says: You are my protector and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. For He will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words, His splash will overshadow you, and trusting under His wing, His truth will bypass you with a weapon. Do not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies during the day, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak and demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will be at your right hand, but it will not come close to you, otherwise you will look at your eyes and see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope; You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not approach your body, as His Angel commanded you to keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone; tread on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him and glorify him, I will fill him with long days and show him My salvation.

Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thou hast revealed to me Thy unknown and secret wisdom.

You have overthrown hell, O Master, and you have resurrected those who have died from time immemorial: and now you have taken him away from us into the bosom of Abraham, You, God, have abode, having forgiven all sins, for You are Merciful.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

The commandment that you gave to me, O God, transgressed and were mortal, but You, God, who descended into the grave and resurrected souls from all eternity, do not raise me up, O Master, to torment, but to rest, the departed one cries out to You with us, O Most Merciful.

Glory:

And now: From heaven, Christ our God, like rain on the fleece, the Most Pure One, descended on Thee, drinking the whole world and drying up all the godless streams, flooding the whole earth with His mind, Ever-Virgin; Pray to him to give peace to Your departed servant, name

Lord have mercy ( Three times). Glory to this day:

Song 7

Irmos:

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

Master Christ God, whenever you want to judge the world, have mercy on the soul of your servant, whom you received from us, crying: our father, God, blessed are you.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

In the food of heaven, where the righteous souls rejoice, those who have served You, consider with them, O Christ, the soul of Your servant, who sang: Our father, God, blessed art thou.

Glory: Saved three Jewish youths into the fires, glorified in the Three Faces, deliver the eternal fire of the departed, who sang to You truly: our father, God, blessed art thou.

And now: Who gave birth to the Lord Christ, who gave birth to God of all, delivered the power of the dark prince of the air, O Virgin, who reposed her soul in faith and sang: Our father, God, blessed art thou.

Song 8

Irmos:

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

Having finished the course and come running to You, Lord, the departed one now cries out, forgive my sins, O Christ God, and do not judge me, when you want to judge everyone, for I truly cry to You: all the works of the Lord, sing to the Lord and exalt Him forever.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

He bore, O Master, Thy yoke on his frame, and Thy burden was light, even if not always, but in the place of Thy saints indwelled his soul, who sang to Thee, Christ the Savior: bless the youths, sing to the priests, people exalt Him forever.

Beginningless Holy Trinity, God the Father and the Son and the Holy Soul, in the person of the saints rank the soul of Your departed servant and deliver eternal fire, so that He may praise You, singing forever: bless the youths, sing to the priests, people exalt Him forever.

And now: Thee, Virgin, prophecy of the face prophesied, for the clairvoyant eyes of Thee saw: for the rod is called Thee, and also the eastern door, and the uncut mountain of man. We confess You truly as the Mother of God, who gave birth to the God of all things, and pray to Him for the repose of the departed One forever and ever.

Song 9

Irmos:

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant.

There is no one, O Merciful One, who has not sinned among men, except You alone, Jesus Christ, take away the sins of the whole world. Moreover, having cleansed Thy servant from sins, establish in Thy holy courts, for Thou art the life of peace, light, and joy of all who have pleased You.

Glory: All human nature marveled at how the only-begotten Son of the beginningless Father received flesh from the Virgin through the action of the Holy Spirit, and suffered like a man, so that the dead could be brought to life. Thus, now departed from us, we diligently pray to Thee, in the land of the living, as Good, dwell.

And now: We call Your Bride, Most Pure, the Invisible Father, and the Mother of the Son, embodied by You in the Holy Spirit, and Your prayer book for Your departed servant, namename

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, ever-blessed and most immaculate and Mother of our God. The most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who without corruption gave birth to God the Word, the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee ( bow).

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us ( three times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy ( three times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Troparion, tone 4

With the spirits of the righteous who have passed away, give rest to the soul of Your servant, O Savior, preserving him in the blessed life that belongs to You, O Lover of Mankind.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, glory to you, O God ( three times).

Lord have mercy ( three times)

Troparion, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it to everyone that is useful, O Lord, rest the soul of Thy servant, the only Creator, for place my trust in You, Creator and Maker and our God.

Glory, even now: Theotokos: To you and the wall, and the refuge of the imams, and the prayer book favorable to God, Whom you gave birth to, O Blessed Mother of God, salvation of the faithful.

Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thou hast revealed to me Thy unknown and secret wisdom.

Bringing alien fire before the Lord, as self-indulgence, as a violation of the established order of worship, was such a serious crime that the guilty, as a warning to others, were immediately punished with death. See Leviticus 10, 1-2; Number 3, 4; 26, 61.

In the prayers and hymns of the church, writes the righteous Saint John of Kronstadt († 1908), “the Spirit of truth moves throughout their entire space... Prayers and hymns are the breath of the Holy Spirit” (John of Kronstadt, the righteous. So that prayer does not become a sin. St. Petersburg, 2002, pp. 83-84).

“All liturgical books,” the outstanding Serbian theologian of the twentieth century, the Monk Justin (Popovich, † 1979), continues the same thought, “all prayers (worship services) are the living, grace-filled life of the Church. These are dogmas expressed in the words of prayer, and through prayer they are transformed into the soul of our soul, into the life of our faith. This is Orthodox pedagogy - the flow of the living, undying, apostolic life of the Holy Tradition" (Justin (Popovich), Rev. On the Theanthropic Path. St. Petersburg, 199, pp. 140-141.

See Afanasy (Sakharov), bishop. On the commemoration of the dead according to the charter of the Orthodox Church. SPb., 1995, p. 17, 19-21.

It is also true that ascetics who have reached high levels of spiritual life and have taken upon themselves the feat of silence no longer need the usual order of church services, since their minds are constantly in prayer. “Ases and songs are church traditions,” writes the Monk Barsanuphius the Great, “and are well established for the agreement of all people (in prayers), also in hostels for the agreement of many. The skits do not read the hours or songs, but practice in private needlework, reading and meditation and, after a few hours of time, begin prayer" (St. Barsanuphius the Great and John's guide to spiritual life in the answers and questions of disciples. (St. Petersburg, 1905, answer 74). However, this does not mean that they violate the Charter church, On the contrary, having fulfilled it (not only in letter, but also in spirit) they achieve freedom in Christ.

The words about obedience to the Church are especially important to remember in our evil time, a time of all-pervasive lies, which requires standing firmly in the purity of faith, unswervingly following church institutions received from the holy fathers. After all, time is inexorable and our life is rapidly approaching the end, and if we deviate from the right path, we may not have time left to correct ourselves.

The book was published by our publishing house in 1999.

Octoechos (Greek - octovocal) - a book containing the services of the days of the week of eight tones. The Church Charter refers to all seven days of the week as a week; the week is the first day of the week, Sunday. The Church primarily devotes Saturday among the days of the week to the remembrance of the departed (as well as to the remembrance of all the saints who have pleased God from the ages).
